One of the most anticipated trades of the NBA offseason ended unexpectedly. Damian Lillard, who requested a trade from the team he defended for eleven seasons, ended up being traded to the Milwaukee Bucks instead of the Miami Heat, a team he really wanted to play for and whose preference caused controversy in the league.

This type of demonstration goes against NBA rules, which establish that players cannot refuse to play for a team when traded while still under contract with their current teams. In other words, if you're not a free agent, you don't exactly have a choice if your team manages to trade with another team.

The Miami Heat were interested in signing Lillard, but wanted to do so at the lowest possible cost and did not want to offer anything other than a trade for Tyler Herro and future first-round draft picks, a proposal that displeased the Portland Trail Blazers.

Thus, the negotiation dragged on for months, without effort on the part of the Miami team, which knew Lillard's preference and chose to make the process difficult. Finally, Lillard returned to play in Portland, but management was no longer willing to keep him on the team.

Then, a much better proposal came from the Milwaukee Bucks, offering none other than point guard Jrue Holiday, champion of the NBA and the United States national team. In an exchange involving three teams, the Portland Trail Blazers also received Deandre Ayton and Toumani Camara, from the Phoenix Suns, as well as future first-round draft picks.

Now, with Lillard and Antetokounmpo, the Milwaukee team is once again among the favorites for the NBA title and provides significant reinforcement to keep the Greek forward in the team as the duo should give their opponents a lot of trouble in the coming seasons.

Uma das trocas mais esperadas da pré-temporada da NBA acabou de forma inesperada. Damian Lillard, que solicitou a troca ao time que defendeu durante onze temporadas, acabou negociado para o Milwaukee Bucks ao invés do Miami Heat, equipe que realmente desejava jogar e cuja preferência causou polêmica na liga.

Seria muito mais fácil se os jogadores simplesmente negociassem seus contratos e cumprissem até o fim do mesmo, no entanto podem acontecer desentendimentos com o elenco ou insatisfação com o nível técnico da equipe.

No caso de Lillard, o armador esperava que o time de Portland trouxesse reforços para remontar a equipe e ter chances de competir na pós-temporada, o que não aconteceu e frustrou a expectativa do atleta de 33 anos.

Como já havia renovado o contrato na temporada passada, o jogador solicitou uma troca, com preferência para o Miami Heat, uma das equipes mais fortes da liga e um dos favoritos ao título da Conferência Leste.

Até aí, tudo normal. No entanto, chegou à imprensa a informação de que o agente de Lillard teria avisado as outras equipe que ele só queria ser trocado para o time de Miami e que não desejava jogar em nenhum outro lugar.

Esse tipo de manifestação contraria as regras da NBA, que estabelece que os jogadores não podem se negar a jogar por uma equipe quando negociados ainda sob contrato com suas equipes atuais. Ou seja, se você não é um agente livre, não tem exatamente escolha caso sua equipe consiga uma troca com outro time.
