El Espanyol se despide de la Copa del Rey / Espanyol says goodbye to the Copa del Rey

Aunque esta teniendo un arranque de temporada positivo en la liga española, metiéndose en la sexta posición de la tabla general, el Espanyol de Manolo González no pudó contra el Atlético Baleares de la tercera división, y se despide muy prematuramente de la Copa del Rey, siendo además, junto al Girona, los únicos equipos de primera división que cayeron en los 32avos de final.

Although they are having a positive start to the season in the Spanish league, getting into sixth position in the overall standings, Manolo González's Espanyol could not overcome Atlético Baleares from the third division, and they say goodbye very prematurely to the Copa del Rey, also being, along with Girona, the only first division teams that fell in the round of 32.

Lo cierto, es que el equipo catalán tomó este juego con aparente 0 importancia, pues más allá de la diferencia de nivel entre ambos, los pericos salieron con un once totalmente diferente al del fin de semana, cuando vencieron por la mínima al Celta en su campo. Pero esto no es algo nuevo, ya el año pasado sufrieron una eliminación en esta misma fase, cuando el Barbastro les endosó un 2 a 0, con un equipo en campo igual de improvisado, repitiendo una formación con muchos jóvenes de las categorías menores, y otros con menos minutos en el primer equipo.

Aunque el Atlético Baleares les cedió la iniciativa, el Espanyol no pudo romper el bloque defensivo bajo, realizando varios tiros incómodos, que ni siquiera fueron entre los 3 palos defendidos por el guardameta rival Rivas.

Based on their limited playing time against Celta Vigo, and how crucial it was in that match, Manolo González started Kike García, who scored the winning goal, along with Edu Expósito. However, with players lacking match fitness, they couldn't make the difference, and the team struggled with the overall poor performance. Although Atlético Baleares ceded possession, Espanyol couldn't break down their deep defensive block, resulting in several awkward shots that didn't even register on target against Celta goalkeeper Rivas.

El Espanyol tuvo el balón en grandes tramos del juego, pero esa posesión era estéril al no conseguir avanzar a los metros finales, y aunque en la primera parte ya podíamos hacer un diagnóstico de lo sucedido en el juego, el técnico perico no movió su banquillo, pagándolo rápidamente en la reanudación del juego, pues un centro desde la izquierda generó una pelota muerta en el área, luego de dar en la mano del defensa Reidel, con lo que Jaume Tovar no lo pensó dos veces, y mandó el balón a guardar.

Ya con el marcador en contra, el banquillo se movió y entraron jugadores más habituales en liga, y aunque la reacción tardó minutos en llegar, el Espanyol arrinconó en su área a los de tercera división, pero aún así, no lograban crear situaciones de verdadero peligro, pues el esquema defensivo prácticamente nunca llegó a romperse. En el 88 tuvieron el único disparo a puerta en toda la segunda mitad, pero el guardameta rival despejó, consumando la eliminación de los catalanes.

No es la primera vez que vemos algo así, pero el exceso de confianza y rotaciones daño la dinámica de el equipo, y aunque no es una estocada de muerte, hay que ver como reaccionan en los siguientes partidos, pues la Copa del Rey es un título importante para estos equipos más chicos, que han visto como en años anteriores es posible ganar este trofeo, con finalistas como el Mallorca, el Osasuna o las finales disputadas entre Betis y Valencia.

Su próximo juego será el domingo en casa contra el Rayo Vallecano, otro de los equipos que han iniciado de gran forma el torneo, aunque con una seguidilla de 3 empates consecutivos, se han alejado un poco de los puestos europeos, aunque cabe resaltar que uno de estos empates fue contra el Real Madrid. Será un juego interesante por la propuesta de ambos equipos, y si el equipo de Manolo González quiere soñar con ir a Europa el próximo año, tendrán que dejar esta derrota atrás y sumar los 3 puntos, pues aún no estamos ni a la mitad de torneo, y la pelea cada vez se pondrá más intensa.
