El renacer del Sassuolo / The rebirth of Sassuolo

En una época donde la Juventus regía el fútbol italiano con mano de hierro, donde llegó a encadenar trofeos en la Serie A de forma consecutiva y muchos equipos de los grandes estaban en capa caída, practicando un fútbol más especulador que los mantenían lejos de los focos mediáticos, varios equipos en Italia empezaron a practicar un juego más vistoso, dejando a un lado el clásico Catenaccio que tanto tiempo identificó al país de la bota.

In an era when Juventus ruled Italian football with an iron fist, winning consecutive Serie A titles and many of the big teams were in decline, practicing a more speculative style of football that kept them away from the media spotlight, several teams in Italy began to play a more attractive game, leaving aside the classic Catenaccio that had long identified the country of the boot.

Si hablamos de esto, a muchos nos llegará a la cabeza inmediatamente la Atalanta de Gasperini, que fue uno de los primeros en querer cambiar el status quo, siendo también, el que más éxitos logró amasar, clasificándose en muchas ocasiones a la Champions League, ganando inclusive la Europa League del 2024, quitándole el invicto al Bayer Leverkusen de Xabi Alonso. A mi en cambio, el primero equipo que me llega a la cabeza es el Sassuolo de Berardi y compañía.

If we're talking about this, many of us will immediately think of Gasperini's Atalanta, one of the first teams to try and change the status quo, and also the one that amassed the most success, qualifying for the Champions League on numerous occasions and even winning the 2024 Europa League, ending Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen's unbeaten run. For me, however, the first team that comes to mind is Berardi's Sassuolo and company.

Recuerdo hace 10 años aproximadamente, levantarme temprano para sintonizar los partidos del equipo dirigido para ese momento por Eusebio Di Francesco, en donde varios futbolistas conocidos actualmente deslumbraban, con Consigli en la portería, con Acerbi en su mejor momento siendo el jefe de la saga central, Vrsaljko en una de los laterales, un joven Pellegrini jugando en el mediocampo, y con Politano y Berardi como principales armas ofensivas.

I remember about 10 years ago, getting up early to tune in to the matches of the team managed at that time by Eusebio Di Francesco, where several footballers known today dazzled, with Consigli in goal, with Acerbi at his best being the boss of the central defense, Vrsaljko on one of the full-backs, a young Pellegrini playing in midfield, and with Politano and Berardi as the main offensive weapons.

Ese equipo lograría dejar por fuera al Milan de competiciones europeas, llevándose un merecidismo 6to lugar en la Serie A. A partir de ese año, el Sassuolo fue como un ascensor, encadenando buenas temporadas con otras no tan buenas, luchando con un presupuesto limitado y viendo como los grandes se llevaban a sus mejores jugadores, hasta que finalmente, en el 2024, no pudieron conservar su proyecto, descendiendo a la Serie B.

That team managed to knock Milan out of European competitions, achieving a well-deserved 6th place in Serie A. From that year onwards, Sassuolo's fortunes were like a rollercoaster, alternating between good and not-so-good seasons, struggling with a limited budget and watching as the big clubs poached their best players, until finally, in 2024, they were unable to maintain their project, being relegated to Serie B.

El infierno de segunda división, que tanto equipos ha destruido, no pudo con el Sassuolo, que solo necesito un año para volver a la máxima categoría del fútbol italiano, ganando cómodamente con 82 años, pese a sólo haber sumado 1 puntos de los últimos 9 posibles, lo que demostró su superioridad en aquel torneo. Para esta vuelta a la Serie A, la dirección del equipo decidió mantener al arquitecto del nuevo proyecto, Fabio Grosso, una leyenda azzurra campeón del mundo con Italia en 2006, que ha sabido trasmitir sus ideas a sus pupilos, logrando hasta el momento, resultados interesantes.

The hell of Serie B, which has destroyed so many teams, couldn't break Sassuolo, who needed only a year to return to the top flight of Italian football, winning comfortably at 82 years old, despite having only managed 1 point out of a possible 9 in the previous season, demonstrating their superiority in that campaign. Todo esto quedó plasmado este fin de semana, pues justamente vencieron a la Atalanta como visitantes, con un contundente 0 a 3, que no sólo les permite adelantarlos en la tabla, sino que además se quedan a sólo 3 puntos de la última posición que da acceso a competición europea. Con esto, se convierten en el mejor equipo de los recién ascendidos, superando al Cremonose, que fue la sensación del inicio de la temporada por mantenerse invicto hasta la jornada 6, así como por vencer al Milan en la primera jornada.

All of this was evident this past weekend, as they convincingly defeated Atalanta 3-0 away from home. This victory not only allowed them to overtake Atalanta in the standings but also put them just three points away from the final European qualification spot. With this win, they become the best of the newly promoted teams, surpassing Cremonose, who were the sensation of the early season, remaining undefeated until matchday six and defeating Milan in their opening match.

Lo mejor de todo, es que pese a los fracasos vividos, el equipo busca mantener su identidad, con un juego de posesiones largas, dando especial importancia a los centrales y a los mediocampistas de contención, ya que son los encargados de salir jugando, contando con una calidad técnica inusual en un equipo de este calibre. Así mismo, los laterales suelen jugar con cierta libertad ofensiva, mientras que los extremos están bien pegados a la bandas, lo que ensancha más el campo y les permite encontrar espacios interiores.

The best thing about it all is that, despite past setbacks, the team strives to maintain its identity, playing a possession-based style with long spells of possession. They place particular emphasis on the center-backs and holding midfielders, as these are the key players in building attacks from the back, possessing a level of technical skill unusual for a team of this caliber. Similarly, the full-backs tend to play with a degree of attacking freedom, while the wingers hug the touchlines, widening the field and allowing them to find space in the middle.

Por los momentos, los goleadores del equipo son Pinamonti con 4 tantos, un conocido del equipo que jugó el año pasado en Genova, y Domenico Berardi, la imagen y el mejor jugador de este equipo, que pese a todo, se ha mantenido fiel a los neroverdi, y hoy por hoy, es el mejor jugador de la historia del Sassuolo. No espero clasificación a Europa este año, pero si me gustaría que se consolidará más este nuevo proyecto, ya que si soy sincero, la Serie A es posiblemente la liga más aburrida en la actualidad, hablando meramente del juego visto en el campo, y necesitan equipos como éste para dar el siguiente paso.

Currently, the team's top scorers are Pinamonti with four goals, a familiar face who played for Genoa last year, and Domenico Berardi, the face and best player of the team. Despite everything, Berardi has remained loyal to the Neroverdi and is, to this day, the best player in Sassuolo's history. I don't expect them to qualify for Europe this year, but I would like to see this new project become more established, because if I'm honest, Serie A is possibly the most boring league right now, speaking purely of the game seen on the field, and they need teams like this to take the next step.
