El Tottenham esta al borde del abismo / Tottenham are on the brink of disaster
Aprovechando esta semana de parón internacional, quería hablar de un equipo histórico de Inglaterra que está al borde del abismo, el Tottenham Hotspur, uno de los clubes considerados Big Six, es decir, uno de los equipos con más poder adquisitivo del mundo. Es increíble ver como han cambiando las cosas, pues hace menos de 10 años, estaban jugando una final de la Champions League, y hoy en día, están a sólo 1 punto del descenso.
Taking advantage of this international break, I wanted to talk about a historic English team that's on the brink of relegation: Tottenham Hotspur, one of the clubs considered the Big Six, meaning one of the wealthiest clubs in the world. It's incredible to see how things have changed. Less than 10 years ago, they were playing in a Champions League final, and today they're just one point above the relegation zone.
Desde la temporada pasada, su rendimiento ha sido más que cuestionable, por liga terminaron a un par de puestos del descenso, y solo levantar la Europa League salvó un año terrible, pues no sólo lograron meterse a Champions de milagro, sino que lo ganaron frente a un rival directo, el Manchester United. Con todo y eso, el técnico Ange Postevoglou no se libró del despido, pues según el mismo australiano, el siempre ganaba un título en su segundo año al frente del club, y al parecer, nadie quiso ver que pasaría en un tercer año bajo su dirigencia.
Since last season, their performance has been more than questionable. In the league, they finished just a couple of places above the relegation zone, and only winning the Europa League salvaged a terrible year. They not only miraculously qualified for the Champions League, but they won it against a direct rival, Manchester United. Even so, manager Ange Postevoglou was sacked. According to the Australian himself, he always won a title in his second year in charge, and apparently, no one wanted to see what would happen in a third year under his leadership.
Como sustituto llegó Thomas Frank, artífice del gran rendimiento del Brentford en la Premier League estos últimos 5 años, y la verdad, nunca llegó a imprimir su estilo de juego en la plantilla, además de que también sufrió muchas bajas de piezas importantes, que inevitablemente, hicieron las cosas más complicadas. Otro contexto muy diferente fue la Champions League, donde sorprendentemente metió a los Spurs en la cuarta posición de la tabla general, una guiño a que tal vez, la competición liguera inglesa es más complicada de lo que esperábamos.
Thomas Frank, the architect of Brentford's impressive Premier League performances over the past five years, was brought in as his replacement. However, he never truly instilled his playing style into the squad, and the team also suffered numerous key player losses, which inevitably complicated matters. The Champions League, however, presented a very different picture, surprisingly guiding Spurs to a fourth-place finish, suggesting that the English league competition might be more challenging than anticipated.
En otra decisión absurda de la directiva, Frank fue despedido y llegó el croata Tudor, quien pese a su fracaso en la Juventus, recibió toda la confianza para recomponer al equipo. Esto no pudo salir peor, en Champions fue eliminado por el Atlético de Madrid con un global de 7 a 5, resultado maquillado en el partido de vuelta en Londres, ya que se encontraban sin opciones de clasificación; y por el torneo de la regularidad, más allá de un empate contra Liverpool, solo conocen la derrota.
In another absurd decision by the board, Frank was sacked and the Croatian Tudor arrived, who, despite his failure at Juventus, was given full confidence to rebuild the team. Things couldn't have gone worse. In the Champions League, they were eliminated by Atlético Madrid with an aggregate score of 7-5, a result somewhat flattering in the second leg in London, as they were already out of contention for qualification. And in the league, apart from a draw against Liverpool, they have only known defeat.
Esto los ha llevado a la posición 17, a solo un punto del descenso que lo marca el West Ham United con 29 puntos, y ha falta de 7 jornadas, sumado a la mejoría de rendimiento de los mismos Hammers, el Tottenham lo tendrá difícil para mantener la categoría, algo que sería devastador para el club. El año pasado, la suerte jugó a favor tanto de los Spurs como del Manchester United, pues pese a sacar puntuaciones paupérrimas, donde tal vez, hasta en esta misma temporada hubieran descendido, la pelea por el descenso fue de las peores de la historia.
This has left them in 17th place, just one point above the relegation zone, currently occupied by West Ham United with 29 points. With seven games remaining, and given West Ham's improved form, Tottenham will face a tough battle to avoid relegation, a devastating outcome for the club. Last year, luck favored both Spurs and Manchester United, as despite abysmal points totals—perhaps even this season they would have been relegated—their relegation battle was one of the worst in history.
Su situación actual no solo refleja un problema de planeación, o más bien, de la ausencia de ella, ya que es lo único que me explica esos cambios tan súbitos en el área técnica. Mucha responsabilidad de esto tiene el despido de Daniel Levy, presidente ejecutivo del club por más de 20 años, quien transformó al equipo en lo que es actualmente, y aunque fue celebrado por parte de la afición, que veían como había un problema interno en el club que cada vez se agudizaba más, la era post su gestión, esta siendo un total fracaso.
Their current situation reflects not only a planning problem, or rather, a lack thereof, as that's the only thing that explains these sudden changes in the technical area. Much of the blame for this lies with the dismissal of Daniel Levy, the club's executive president for over 20 years, who transformed the team into what it is today. Although his departure was celebrated by some fans, who saw the club's internal problems growing ever more acute, the post-Levy era has been a complete failure.
Las últimas decisiones de este controvertido personaje, se reflejaron el año pasado, donde al menos, rompieron la sequía de títulos del equipo londinense. Ya con una nueva dirección, y con millones gastados en fichajes como Xavi Simons o Conor Gallagher, la cosa cada vez pinta peor, pues un descenso de los Spurs significaría casi la quiebra del club.
The latest decisions of this controversial figure were reflected last year, where they at least ended the London team's title drought. Now, with new management and millions spent on signings like Xavi Simons and Conor Gallagher, things are looking increasingly bleak, as relegation for Spurs would practically mean bankruptcy for the club.
El técnico actual del equipo nunca me ha parecido siquiera un bueno, los jugadores están muy por debajo de su nivel, y las lesiones imposibilitan crear un once tipo, por lo que veo verdaderamente factible un descenso. Lo único positivo fue la eliminación de Europa, ya que ahora podrán centrar sus esfuerzos en la Premier League, y tanto el Leeds como el Nottingham Forest, por plantilla y actualidad, tienen muchas papeletas para terminar por debajo en la tabla, pues a mi consideración, creo que el West Ham terminará consiguiendo la salvación.
I've never even considered the current manager to be good, the players are performing well below their usual standard, and injuries make it impossible to field a consistent starting eleven, so I see relegation as a very real possibility. The only positive was their elimination from Europe, as they can now focus their efforts on the Premier League, and both Leeds and Nottingham Forest, given their squads and current form, are very likely to finish below them in the table. In my opinion, West Ham will ultimately secure their survival.
