Karl Hein Has Horror Debut

Mikel Arteta has come out strongly defended picking debutant goalkeeper Karl Hein after he was key to Arsenal's crash out of the Carabao Cup at the hands of Brighton on Wednesday night. Instead of starting the usual second choice in Turner who was coming from injury, he took a gamble on Hein and it didn't pay off.

His debut got off to the worst possible start with the unthinkable, he raced out to defend and slipped. A thing that could have happened to anyone but and we might chalk it up to bad luck, but the slip was not the only issue, it lead to him overcompensating and compounding the error by getting up to foul Danny Welbeck.

Hein could do little about the second goal but by that point, the damage was done.

While he was too slow to come out for the third as well, which should have been a routine block, he didn't inspire the defence to help him either and doesn't have the commanding presence a goalkeeper needs in the modern game.

It was a decision that would prove very costly for the Estonian giving away the opening goal with a simple slip-up that should have never happened and it clearly rattled him. He couldn't get close to saving the resulting penalty and it only saw his confidence shattered.

The misery was only compounded by conceding two more goals and having the team kicked out of a cup competition, which could have seen him get more game time.

Mikel has come out with some words of encouragement, but we've seen how this story ends, another young keeper had a similar shot and dropped the ball in Runnarson and he never saw the field again, and I think it will be the same for Hein.

I think Turner will continue to be Ramsdale's understudy and Arsenal can safely bin this lad and send him back to the Estonian league, he simply isn't up to the task.
