Hablar de Roberto Baggio es hablar de historia, es uno de los jugadores que ha marcado un antes y un después en el futbol mundial, pero sobre todo en el futbol italiano, donde paso toda su carrera como futbolista. La figura de Roberto Baggio es muy amada en toda Italia, y no es para menos, es considerado uno de los mejores jugadores italianos de todos los tiempos, y para otros simplemente el mejor. Recuerdo que lo vi jugar por primera vez cuando tenía 8 años de edad, en el mundial de USA 94, y quede encantado con su calidad dentro de la cancha, era impresionante como regateaba a sus rivales y la creatividad que tenía para anotar goles, hacia ver fácil jugadas difíciles y las completaba con mucha facilidad.

The figure of Roberto Baggio is much loved throughout Italy, and no wonder, he is considered one of the best Italian players of all time, and for others simply the best. I remember seeing him play for the first time when I was 8 years old, in the USA 94 World Cup, and I was enchanted with his quality on the field, it was impressive how he dribbled his opponents and the creativity he had to score goals, he made difficult plays look easy and completed them with ease.

Tan solo tenía 15 años de edad para ese entonces, y aunque jugaba muy poco con el equipo principal, en las inferiores tenía mucha actividad. No fue hasta el año 1985 que empezaría a ser conocido y admirado, esto fue cuando comenzó a jugar en la Fiorentina, uno de sus mejores tiempos, estaba en plena juventud, y fue tanta su calidad que cinco años después protagonizo el traspaso record para su momento cuando fue fichado por la Juventus. Esto se convirtió en algo memorable en toda Italia, tanto asi que causo disturbios en las calles de Florencia como descontento por haber dejado ir a su jugador estrella, es la única vez que ha sucedido algo asi en el futbol italiano, que un cambio genere tanta polémica.

La carrera de Roberto Baggio es un ejemplo a seguir, desde muy niño toco un balón, prácticamente toda su infancia fue jugando futbol y viendo a sus ídolos en estadios y pantallas de televisión, pero lo que marco su éxito más allá de su talento fue su vida disciplinada tanto fuera como dentro de la cancha, si hacemos una retrospectiva de su vida jamás encontraremos eventos escandalosos de este jugador, y eso es lo que lo diferencia de muchos otros que fueron muy buenos pero que desperdiciaron su carrera por su indisciplina. Baggio fue objeto de mucha polémica durante toda su carrera, era el mejor del momento pero en ocasiones fue menospreciado por técnicos como Marcello Lippi, quien le negó la titularidad en el Inter de Milán, un evento que causo mucha controversia en toda Italia, lo mismo paso cuando no fue convocado al Mundial del 2002 por Trapattoni, era como si hoy en día Portugal clasificara al mundial del año siguiente (2022) y Cristiano Ronaldo no sea convocado, imagina todo el revuelo que causaría, bueno asi fue en aquel entonces. Aun asi, Il Divino mantuvo su profesionalidad y respeto hacia sus seleccionadores y todo el entorno.

Es paradójico, pero más allá de su excelente carrera, una de las cosas más notables de este jugador y por el cual es muy recordado, fue el penal que fallo en el mundial de USA 94, quizás el penal más famoso de todos los tiempos, pero con haber marcado ese penal la historia de los campeones mundiales quizás sería diferente y tendríamos a la escuadra azurra como la máxima laureada a nivel de selecciones. Esto es algo que lo marco durante toda su carrera, tanto a él como a toda la afición italiana, pero afortunadamente no fue un punto que haya causado una ruptura entre ambas partes, todo lo contrario, más allá de la importancia del gol errado, la empatía de los italianos se hizo presente y eso no trajo más que admiración por un jugador que puso a la selección de Italia muy en alto.

Por último, he de destacar que la carrera de Roberto Baggio fue muy exitosa a pesar de todo lo mencionado anteriormente y quizás otras cosas que obvio acá, pero en cuanto a títulos y premios solo le faltó ganar la Champions a nivel de clubes y el mundial con la selección italiana; su mejor año fue en 1993 donde obtuvo premios individuales como el balón de oro y el mejor jugador FIFA. Concluyó su carrera futbolística con 318 goles, 291 en clubes y 27 con la absoluta, y se retiró oficialmente del futbol en el año 2004. En definitiva, este jugador desde mi punto de vista es el mejor que ha tenido Italia en toda su historia futbolística, un gran segunda punta que jamás decepciono y siempre estaba por encima de sus rivales, un excelente ejemplo para muchos italianos y amantes del futbol en general.
