Skyrunnunig: Run to get to the sky

A few years ago, when I still had free time and was passionate about amateur running and with some participation in some local competitions, I saw on TV a very interesting report on Skyrunning, which may seem like the name of a skyscraper reality is mountain running.

The sporting activity consists in following paths, rural sections, paths on snow or between rocks, and only a very short path on asphalt is allowed. For those who love classic road racing, they will know well the efforts that are felt during the race although we are not talking about reductive routes of 10 km but of long distances.

Skyrunning is a basic discipline that includes running but not only. Being a discipline that takes place mainly in the mountains, it is also necessary to have technical knowledge on how to proceed with climbing for some sections with a strong difference in height and in these cases the use of sticks similar to those used by skiers is allowed to give themselves momentum and speed. .

Skyrunning is terribly tiring, hard, painful because the muscles are subjected to various non-linear efforts between steep climbs and dangerous descents. Furthermore, the track is made up of earth and stone and it is necessary to be very careful in order to avoid small injuries by placing the foot incorrectly.

But what drives an athlete to play this crazy sport?

Love for nature. The effort of each step is rewarded by the wonder of the natural environment that surrounds it: the calm of the mountain. It is undeniable that running through the paths or its sides of the mountain, gives indefinable sensations, it's just you and the nature around you.

The thrill of being at an altitude of 3000 or 4000 meters, breathing pure air, fresh oxygen that regenerates the lungs but above all the mind. I love nature, although the mountain is quite far from the place where I live and seeing certain images are truly a great incentive to give up everything and abandon yourself in the arms of those places, leaving all the stress that life in the city creates for you.

Training is very hard and you have to be really determined: in addition to running, for which it is necessary to maintain daily physical activity by covering tens of km, it is also necessary to contract all the muscles and tone of the body with free exercises. As previously mentioned, you need to be agile in traveling along dirt roads and with slopes that can change suddenly.

It is an activity that can be carried out both in groups and individually, but the individual experience in my opinion is more appropriate if you want to be one with nature and perhaps avoid getting easily distracted with fellow adventurers. Skyrunning was recognized as a sport by the Italian National Olympic Committee in 2017 under mountaineering, not directly belonging to athletics.

The sport today is divided into different types of races based on the difference in height, the path on snow, the length of the path. A crazy sport suitable only for people who are really out of the ordinary!
