On the road again!

It was a big driving day!

Somehow, I still managed to fit 14,500+ steps (my Actifit app wasn't far off today!)

But it's definitely not my favourite thing to sit on my arse for hours at a time.

Thankfully, Brad is happy doing most of the driving, so really my job is pretty easy:

  • occasional navigational help
  • infrequent checking for oncoming traffic at intersections
  • irregular conversation buddy on all manner of topics

Mostly, I have to feed, water and entertain myself and be strategic about when I want toilet and stretch breaks (because I always want and seem to need more of these than he does).

We saw a lot of hay today; in piles as tall as a big house.

We saw two kangaroos today; they bounced over the fence that ran parallel to the road, then crossed the road, right in front of us. (Mister did a great job of predicting their behaviour and slowing down earlier and for longer than I would have.)

We saw a lot of long, straight roads; maybe more than I've seen in the last decade. It was pretty impressive. And pretty dry. It's barely rained for months out here.

Well, until yesterday. When we (and by we I mean Brad 😅) were trying to get from our housesit to St Arnaud in NW VIC.

I couldn't help but think that all these locals must have been delighted to finally get some rain 🌧️🌧️🌧️

(Photo taken by the passenger, aka yours truly. And while it's kind of misleading, because we didn't actually drive from Melbourne - the capital of Victoria, to Adelaide - the capital of South Australia, we DID drive along a long section of this "highway". And... we are now closer to Adelaide than we've been in 7 years.)

In imposed stillness, the mind finds its true training ground. Patience, that quintessential Stoic virtue, is not just about waiting, but about cultivating inner strength and the ability to observe the flow of life with serenity, recognising beauty even in the straightest and most monotonous paths.

Prudence and responsibility, as you rightly point out, are beacons that guide our actions, especially when nature shows us its power and grace. Admiration for the majesty of the natural world, from the immense hay bales to the freedom of the kangaroos, reminds us of our humble position and the deep interconnectedness that binds us to all living things.

Rain, that whisper of life for the thirsty earth, symbolises renewal and hope. It teaches us that after dryness, sustenance always comes. Thus, in our own existence, the ability to adapt and the wisdom to find calm amid movement are the true riches. Sharing the path, with generosity and respect, is the essence of a flourishing society.
