An osprey, three back swans and an echnidna... rambling across the main road. Where am I?!
I have seen a heap of animals here already and it's only the first afternoon.
Kangaroo Island, off the southern coast of South Australia, is truly remarkable. I knew it would be, but to be surprised in the first very hour on this giant island is fun indeed.
KI, as it's known locally, is much larger than either @new.things or I expected. After a quick Google, it turns out it's the third largest island in Australia (not counting the mainland, which, in case you didn't know, is ALSO an island!)
And while it may be a giant island compared to many in this wide, brown land, it has a small human population. And perhaps because of this, a large and diverse animal population.
Like the short-beaked echnidna that rambled across the main road in front of us as we drove this afternoon between the two biggest towns on the entire island!
And the black swans that were riding the waves in the sea that we were able to spy from the window of our accomodation.
And what I think was an osprey (a small bird of prey) that was expertly rising the wind waves as it searched for food, well above my head as I walked before dinner.
Kangaroo Island: this place is amazing.
I can't wait to go on an adventure to explore more of the island tomorrow. 🙌
