A Seriously Good Crash With A Happy Ending

Probably the best crash I have seen in years. This was from a Formula 3 race in Macau,November 2018. Sophia is one lucky lady along with a whole host of people who surely needed to change their trousers after this one.

Last night was the Laureus awards in Berlin and I am happy to say the lady in this crash received comeback of the year award. Yes it was a lady driver who went off into the shopping center after only 4 laps. Fortunately she only fractured her spine which is quite remarkable after seeing this one at full speed. Everyone was incredibly lucky as she hit the photographers tower just missing the workers below. Any higher and she would easily have taken what looks like a bar with a balcony full of spectators. The car was going that fast it would easily have reached that building.

Sophia Florsch has been driving since she was 5 years of age doing karting like all the other boys do who grow up into racing drivers. She has come the hard way through the ranks and is one tough cookie.

The crash which fractured her spine with no lasting defect thanks to a 17 hour operation. There were some other people injured when she went skywards notably the car that helped launch her driven by Sho Tsuboi plus two photographers and a marshall.

With Formula One looking at street circuits these things will happen and you just hope that no one close by shopping gets taken out. This could have been so much worse as it was a freak accident turning her car into a missile. The Macau circuit has made some changes to the corner now making this section a little safer.

She was back in the driving seat after only 4 months and it has just been announced that she will partner with two other lady drivers making an all women team for the Le Mans racing series driving an Oreca 07 Gibson. These girls are not normal as on the left we have former Indy car driver Katherine Legg,Tatiana Calderón who is Formula One Alpha Romeo test driver and Sophia.

Sophia has come out strongly about Ferrari offering driving spots for women in the Academy saying it is too little too late.She believes it is more about their image than actually taking it seriously. She will be 20 this year and has her eyes firmly set on a Super Licence so I expect to see more of her hopefully in the years to come. I would rather look at her than our current crop of drivers.
