Aston Martin Racing 2021 Formula One Team

This was on the cards and Aston Martin will have a works team in racing for the first time in over 60 years.The last time was 1959 and 1960 where they failed to even score one point and bowed out after complete failure.I mentioned that this would happen in a post a few days ago as this was looking more and more obvious and was inevitable. What does this do and does it impact Formula One?

The simple answer is yes in a big way. The small things such as Red Bull having the Aston Martin name will disappear along with the $20 Million sponsorship. The obvious remedy is Honda take over the name which I am sure will happen from the end of this season. The amount isn't really a big amount for a title sponsor and there should be a list of possible candidates clambering for this space. Red Bull may just keep their name as they don't really need the money and just use Red Bull Racing.

Racing Point changes name to Aston Martin Racing and becomes a works team. A works team is a team supported directly by the manufacturer like Renault, Mercedes and Ferrari. Having the factory backing you is a huge advantage. The two drivers will have to go as they are just not good enough. Lance Stroll's career is at a crossroads and another year like last year and he is done. Perez is the wrong nationality as they need a British driver and a Mexican just won't do it. He wont have a seat as the days of buying your way in are over from the end of 2020.

Toto Wolff and Lawrence Stroll have a close relationship already and don't expect to see them together in the press until the big announcement.

The biggest change is not a definite but my gut tells me it all makes sense and that is Mercedes disappearing entirely off the grid. Everything just makes sense that they withdraw from Formula One from what we know now. The Mercedes AMG engines will be with 3 teams next year McLaren,Williams and Aston Martin and adding another with Mercedes doesn't make financial sense.

AMG is a shareholder with Aston Martin and that guarantees that AMG supply engines from 2021 to Aston Martin Racing. Toto Wolf is a shareholder in Mercedes Formula One and can see him becoming a shareholder in Aston Martin Racing. He is the best Team Principal on the circuit and I am sure will move over to the new team taking the key members of his current crew. Basically I don't see Racing Point being replaced by Aston Martin but more like Mercedes changing their sign and a few members of Racing Point joining them if any. Why break up a winning team which has the records to back it up.

Lewis Hamilton will not sign with anyone else and will wait for the next month until after Mercedes has made their big announcement before announcing who he has signed for next season. Being British he will be drawn to joining Aston Martin and with Toto Wolff who is a good friend as the Principal he will not sign for Ferrari. I am reading between the lines and this is what makes the most sense as they both knew this was happening months ago already. Rather let the press think there is a story regarding a switch to Ferrari and lead them away from the real story which was very smart by both of them.

There is talk of two more billionaires buying teams for the 2021 season and those are just rumors right now as this story is big enough and I believe it will play out. The only part is Lewis Hamilton's new salary which is expected to be in the $40 -$50 Million range which is ludicrous compared to what everyone else is getting and this has to fit into a teams reduced budget. Aston Martin may not want to pay that type of salary so this is the only part that could cause a stumbling block unless he is given shares which is an option.
