How Much Per Minute?

Not really his fault as he spent a year out after being involved in a car crash. Still the club has to keep paying and I am sure they have insurance for this type of thing.

Yesterday @blanchy.sports did a post about a player earning a low salary in the English premiership and thought I would have a dig around to see what I could find.

When a player negotiates a weekly salary and signs for a club as a manager you expect to get your value for money out of that player. They are expected to train hard, eat healthily and just be an allround fit for the team. That is what I would expect anyway if I was managing a group of players.

This doesn't always work out though as some players may not be performing or they suffer from injuries on a regular basis. When a player is earning 100 000 a week it doesn't matter if he is playing or not it is still a cost the club has to bear.

We may think Ronaldo and Messi are really expensive for what they get paid, but they are normally playing in most games so they are at least giving back. The less known players at the club are most likely going to be more expensive per minute for what game time they play overall in a season.

Sturridge should have been sponsored by the RAC as he broke down every 5 minutes.

Last season there were a few players that stood out on the list as a little more than pricey. Some of it was down to injury and bad luck or they just weren't good enough. Obviously Daniel Sturridge springs to mind as he made some brief appearances during the season.

I am going to cherry pick some from last season and this list was current up until around mid February so maybe 2 months short of the season.

Liverpool - Daniel Sturridge £12,381 per minute (Earns £130,000 a week, played 273 minutes last season). His injury kept reoccurring and it was muscle related. Sounds a lot of money, but this is cheap on what is coming.

Manchester United - Alexis Sanchez a bargain buy clearly and luckily moved on since – £10,813 per minute (Earns £350,000 a week, played 615 minutes in the Premier League)

He has since gone to Blackburn Rovers and I am sure Southampton are happy to see him go.

Southampton - Sam Gallagher – £50,000 per minute (Earns £40,000 a week, played 8 minutes in the Premier League). Don't recall him at all, but then 8 minutes is nothing for the season. Possibly one for the future?

Tottenham Hotspur_ Georges-Kevin N’koudou – £218,750 per minute (Earnt £35,000 a week, played 4 minutes in the Premier League). Don't know him either, but not a bad little earner this.

Crystal Palace: Pape Souare – £630,000 per minute (Earns £30,000 a week, played 1 minute in the Premier League). This makes him the most expensive player in the Premiership or if you like £37.8 Million per hour.

Now compare it to someone who thankfully has had his contract adjusted and played quite a bit of football for West Ham..Declan Rice – £38 per minute (Earned £3,000 a week up until December 28th, played 2026 minutes in the Premier League).

I am not feeling sorry for them one bit as each player is covered by medical insurance and if they suffer a career threatening injury they are paid handsomely. I wonder if any of you still remember Gary Bailey the old United keeper. He walked away with Millions after suffering a back injury.

Why buy a player just to sit on the bench? I can understand injuries happening ,but that is madness and just a waste of money.

I'd never considered breaking down a salary to the number of minutes played in a game. Some of the pro football players over here have to be making a killing. At least over here in a lot of these cases the teams hands are tied because of contracts and unions and things like that. They have to pay no matter what even when it isn't beneficial for them anymore.
