More Upgrades Coming For AMG Road Cars

The latest AMG Models will all be receiving a new boost in power and technology when the factory completes it's latest addition. Obviously the AMG Formula One team has some advantages that over run into the road side division.

Hard to believe a company that developed this is now leading the way with engine innovation.

Taking the innovations that have already been achieved and applying them to the road cars is what the end game is all about. Whether we like it or not engines are going electric at some point in the future and converting them over slowly and safely is the challenge.

A new development is the electric exhaust gas turbo charger that is going to be a new feature on the next AMG cars built. This addition will over come the small vs big turbo chargers that are currently available. Smaller being it reacts faster but offers less performance and larger reacting slower due to the lag but offering higher performance.

What the engineers have done is introduce a small electric motor attached to the charger shaft sandwiched between the turbine wheel and the compressor wheel on the outside of the unit. This allows the compressor wheel to function before the gas flow arrives reducing any lag as it has immediate response times. This allows the turbo to assist with pulling away from a standing start and is instant.

I am sure petrol heads will have mixed feelings about this as an electric motor is finally being introduced assisting a normal combustion engine to perform better. This power unit was developed as part of the Energy Recovery System(ERS) on the Formula One car as they need to use every bit of energy so nothing is wasted.

Mercedes are clearly ahead of the others when it comes to the engine side of business as they have won everything since the new. The 1.6 litre four-stroke turbocharged 90 degree V6 was introduced in 2014 and no one has managed to come close to matching their success. The engine has an extremely high rotational speed as it reaches anywhere past 15 000 revolutions per minute (RPM). This is not economic for a road car as imagine idling at a traffic light. When you add the turbo charger things change as then the rev count reaches in the region of 125 000 RPM which is insane.

The engine is where teams can outshine each other on the track not only in performance but also in reliability. The aero dynamics are all roughly the same as there is only so far one can go before the others pick up on what you are doing. The engine is hidden and where most of the secrets lie along with the other electronic gizmos providing back up power.

Mercedes are fortunate to have such an innovative team transferring their knowledge into their road cars. I know by 2030 there are new regulations to have all new cars electric and this is a small step towards that. I think these figures will have to be revisited as from all reports manufacturers think a 20 percent figure is realistic by 2030. We are only talking 10 years from now and where I live there isn't even enough electricity for the housing let alone the cars on the road as well.

Hello @cryptoandcoffee

It is really hard to believe it was the company that build that car, is actually leading in engine renovation. The car actually does not really look modern, maybe that's why. But as they say, "Never judge a book from it's cover".

Thanks for sharing this post 👌.
