RE: Sporting memories: Getting cut from the freshman basketball team in a new city

Sounds terrible as why a team/coaches cannot see talent when it is in front of them is mind blowing. I had a try out 3 days for the National Defence Force team when I was in the Army. I knew I would make the team so skipped the first two days and lazed around the pool at home instead. The final trials Ii turned up and made the team as expected but was also expecting to be punished for skipping the first 2 days. My Captain back at base asked where I was as he and others had gone down to watch me and knew I was in shit so told him the truth and said this was the first time no one had lied to him and respected this. I was let off and they laughed about it. Sometimes it pays to tell the truth no matter what shit is coming your way.

For sure. If i had cared enough and went and told the coach that I am better than this and should be given another shot. I could have demanded that he put me in a couple of games of one-on-one against who he considered to be the best players and I likely would have done pretty well or perhaps even embarrassed them. That being the potential case though I don't necessarily think that basketball coaches at that level are looking for singular talent, they are looking for people they can turn into a team and my inability to even turn up for tryouts probably reflected very poorly on me.
