My NFC North Pre-Season Record Predictions versus Reality - NFL

Way back over the summer I began predicting how I thought the 2019-2020 NFL season would pan out. I literally went through week by week how each matchup would go. It was pretty tedious. It was pretty fun too!

Check out my predictions from a few months back here.

Now that the season is practically over, I thought I would be fun to see how accurate or in-accurate I was. You never know how a season will go year in and year out! I know I was way off on several teams. This should be interesting. I will use these posts I have written to hopefully be more accurate next season.

In this post I will be talking about the NFC North Division.

1. Green Bay Packers

Real Finish: 13-3, Division Champions
My Prediction: 11-5, Second in Division

Well the Packers were a decent little surprise this past season. While I feel like they may have been slight over achievers, You can't deny that they had a very good season! They made it to the final four teams of the season which is more than respectable!

If you give star veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers a stout defense and an actual running game, wonderful things can happen!

I see no reason for the Packers to decline in any way next season. The Packers are usually solid.

2. Minnesota Vikings

Real Finish: 10-6, Second in Division
My Prediction: 5-11, Third in Division

Well, regarding my predictions, I was simply dead wrong about the Minnesota Vikings!

Kirk Cousins improved to a solid degree in 2019. The defense in Minnesota was tough and consistent as always. Running back Dalvin Cook proved to me he is going to continue to be a problem going forward in this league. They have a solid receiving core despite losing Stefon Diggs. Watch out for former Titan wideout Tajae Sharpe to show what he is capable of! Stunk to see him leave Tennessee but I am hopeful he can continue to shine in Minnesota.

I like the style of football the Vikings play. It is solid old school fundamental football. I think the Vikings will be an above average team at least going forward.

3. Chicago Bears

Real Finish: 8-8, Third in Division
My Prediction: 12-4, Division Champions

Well it is safe to say that I was pretty wrong in my prediction for the Chicago Bears.

Most people will say that the reason for the Bears drop off in 2019 was Mitchell Trubisky. I think that is kind of fake news in my opinion. Maybe Trubisky had a bit of a bad year but I think that the coaching in Chicago had something to do with it. Matt Nagy seems kind of odd. Reminds me of Bill O'Brien in Houston. They're smart guys don't get me wrong and have had success. I think maybe they just don't fit the organization.

The Bears as a unit just felt off by a hair. When I feel that way I just feel like that is a coaching issue. The roster as far as I know wasn't radically different from the previous year.

But on a positive note the Bears did sign Nick Foles to perhaps be their starter. As a Tennessee fan I can see the positive side of having quarterbacks competing. When it comes to Foles himself he has got a Super Bowl MVP while being the backup to start a season. So he definitely knows what it's like to compete.

If the Bears can manage the QB situation well not just ok but well, and get the rest of the team to play like they did in 2018 then this Bears team could be pretty good! They have defense and s decent offense and they proved how good they are capable of being just two years ago.

But if they don't coach well and manage the quarterback situation then this Bears team could definitely struggle. I feel very much 50/50 about this team as of now.

4. Detroit Lions

Real Finish: 3-12-1, Fourth in Division
My Prediction: 4-12, Fourth in Division

Well I predicted this team very nearly spot on in both the record and division placement department. But I mean most people saw this coming from Detroit. It wasn't exactly a hot take by me.

It is probably because they play in the NFC and they don't play the Titans that often, but I genuinely feel bad for this franchise. They had like a year or two when superstar Calvin Johnson was around where they were solid and even were a playoff team if I remember correctly. But other than small Calvin Johnson era, the Lions have been pretty much a joke if I'm being honest. I know the Titans haven't been incredibly better but still not nearly as bad as Detroit.

Detroit deserves so much more success than the dang Buffalo Bills, for example.

What is sad is that the Lions actually have a decent quarterback in Matthew Stafford and they still can't figure it out. It seems they consistently fail to even try and get good running backs. Their defense was actually probably better than you would think in 2019 but it still was not good enough.

I have no idea what to expect with the Lions. They will likely stink again. BUT their coach seems like he's at least trying even though I have heard some players in Detroit don't like him that much. They have a solid quarterback which is a highly valuable thing to have in the NFL.

So there could possibly be a path for success for the Lions. But I find those chance to be very very slim.
