Free Agency - Rabona Social Media Challenge

Last week we talked about the five possible formations that the Rabona game engine gives us. There I explained which one I use the most in Division 2 and why. Today, however, it's time to talk about the market. And a section that I use every season or, at least, I check on a regular basis. It's not unusual to find real bargains in the section called "Sign" in the menu of the game or, what is the same, the market for free and out of contract players.

Well, first of all let's explain what the concept behind the term "Free Agency" is. In real life it is nothing more than a list of all those players who are not under contract with any team and therefore we can sign them for our team at zero cost. A more than interesting alternative to complete your squad and to access players of a certain level when you play in the lower leagues of the game.

In the game menu we can sign players in three different ways:

  1. Youth Academy: We promote players from our youth academy for a cost of 20.000 RBN each. A cheap but risky option.
  2. Market: Little to explain here. Those players who are under contract with a team and their manager places them on the market for sale.
  3. Sign (Free Agency): the third way and the one we are explaining in this week's challenge.

Three different options with advantages and disadvantages that need to be analysed.

  1. Youth Academy has a low cost, only RBN 20,000 but we risk not getting what we want. At higher levels of the academy and if we do not have the requirement to fill a specific position, it is an interesting option.
  2. Market: here we buy just what we want with the skills we need. However, it is the most expensive option and we can pay for the hazing by paying dearly for a mediocre player.
  3. Free Agency: similar to the market but at zero cost. However, it requires a lot of time and attention to find a bargain. Especially the higher the level of our squad.

Once we access the Sign screen, we will be presented with a list of free players and four drop-down menus in the top left-hand corner. Play with these menus to focus on the type of players you want. The menus provide these filters:

  1. Position: you know, the four positions that players have in Rabona.
  2. Age: age ranges of the players you are looking for.
  3. OS: the level we want to search for in ranges of 10 by 10.
  4. Reason: scouted, contract cancelled, which we can sign for 3 seasons, or contract expired whose contract with our club will have a duration of 3 to 5 years.

Once you set the filters you will get a possibly reduced list, especially if you use the age filter. My personal experience, being a relative newcomer to the game and with a low league and squad level, is that this section is really useful, especially when your young stars start asking for salaries that are not affordable for your income level.

You probably won't find any big stars in this section. But you can find, if you are insistent, players who are valid for your squad and with a much more affordable salary than what your players will ask for when trying to renew their contracts. In my opinion, this is a section that is worth checking on a daily basis as if setting up the training of your squad were the case.

So that is my review of the Free Agency section. Now, have you signed someone up using this method, do you find it useful or something you don't waste your time on?
