My Actifit RC: June 12th 23 - Naples, on a tourist trip to the afterlife - IAAC #373

A dear greeting to all lovers of physical activities that populate the mythical community of Actifit.

Once every 10 years it happens that the Neapolitan spring is absolutely devastated by the continuous bad weather and this seems to be the case this year. This morning the sky already has traces that are not good omens.

Today I took the Metro 1 to get off at the first stop in via Duomo. Station that is a real maze and that to climb from the fourth floor underground outdoors you have to take three elevators if you do not want to do endless stairs uphill in all are eight ramps. In Naples there is the art of arranging oneself and of asking by word. The indications that are there are not reliable. It is part of the folklore of the place.

Arrived at the lower decumanus I reached the greater decumanus for a narrow alley little frequented but very characteristic. The three Decumani are the three ancient parallel Greek streets of which the old town is composed, which is more than three thousand years old.

Today I take you to one of the darkest places in the city and that are not few. We are in the church of Santa Maria delle anime del Purgatorio a Arco o delle anime pezzentelle.

It is built where there was an old arch of Greek Roman origin and is built on top of another still working church where an incredible number of masses are celebrated per week and houses the skeletons of the Neapolitan people who did not find burial. In short, a cemetery for the souls of the needy people.

The interior of the church is a textbook example of the Neapolitan Baroque with Counter-Reformation architecture. In short, one of the architectural and artistic masterpieces that we are used to seeing in the tours of our #iamalivechallenge.

The altar is a work of art of inestimable value resulting from the teamwork of a team formed by the best artists of the Neapolitan school. It is made with polychromatic marble by Cosimo Fanzago whose workshop has given the Neapolitan churches those unique and divine colors that leave enchanted visitors.

The canvas behind the altar is by Massimo Stanzione and depicted the Madonna of the Purging Souls in which Mary chooses the souls of those who finished her penance in Purgatory to welcome them into heaven. The canvas is above the sculpture of the winged skull of Dioniso Lazzari which, unfortunately, is hidden from the altar in a position inaccessible to the lens of my camera eager to immortalize masterpieces of art heritage of humanity.

On the left we have a monumental tomb in memory of Giulio Mastrillo, the result of the work of Andrea Vaccaro in collaboration with Andrea Falcone. The subject’s gaze is turned to admire devout the work of choice of the Madonna on the altar.

Another immortal work by Vaccaro is in the third chapel on the right depicting the transit of Saint Joseph in which the Madonna seems to proudly show the sacred relic of the deceased Joseph welcomed in triumph by the angels. He seems to say to his son Jesus look at the noble father of spirit you had with your eyes and the son observes from above the father accompanying the function of the journey to heaven.

Among many artists, a young Luca Giordano made his bones showing his formidable skills to the great masters with whom he worked and showing off the legendary colors of his canvas depicting the death or ecstasy of Saint Alexis.

Another table of considerable thickness is this Saint Michael the Archangel who gives the coup de grace to the devil. Canvas by a certain Girolamo de Magistro, a painter who is little known but undoubtedly talented and capable, probably another young collaborator of the Dream Team of Neapolitan art.

While I am ecstatic to contemplate these magnificent works a thunderous and deafening roar shakes the air of the ancient road of wonders. A storm is generating on the hills of Mount Procida and approaching the historic center. There is no time to waste and we return to the base. In the picture we have the basilica of San Paolo Maggiore in the company of the statue of San Gaetano.

On the way back as you can not stop to immortalize the almost completed construction of the church of Girolamini. It would be a shame not to photograph the bright colors freshly refreshed in this other architectural masterpiece. Well, given the size of some of the city’s 500 domes, seeing them restored seems like a miracle.

The storm, then, has just grazed us dropping a small and abundant backhand. Meanwhile I arrived in Viale Margherita where I celebrate the #iamalivechallenge 373 waiting for the arrival #alive a lady I have to show how a program works.

The afternoon I dedicate to work at home and to the computer even if I have to go down to CAF to deliver the papers of my 730 to the tax consultant.

Good thing I devoted the morning to physics because soon there was a new storm this time much more intense than the morning. They are down appetizers of the cold air that is coming on Italy.
