Decidí ver el partido entre el Atlético y el City porque tenía mucho interés en ver la reacción del Atlético después de su derrota en el primer partido, y además considero que estos 2 equipos eran candidatos importantes para ganar el torneo. Además, el Liverpool ya tiene una ventaja importante sobre el Benfica y pensé que había poco más que hacer en esa eliminatoria.
El partido entre el City y el Atlético es un partido entre diferentes formas de jugar al fútbol. Eso quedó muy claro en su partido anterior cuando el Atlético lo único que hizo fue defender y el City todo lo que hizo fue atacar.
Estas diferentes filosofías son válidas y ambas pueden tener éxito, el problema en este partido es que el equipo que ama defender, el Atlético, estaba obligado a marcar goles y ganar el partido si quería pasar a semifinales. No tendría sentido para ellos continuar enfocándose en la defensa mientras están perdiendo. Podría ser una buena estrategia si estuvieran ganando, pero si están perdiendo, tendrían que cambiar y mucho.
Esto es lo que me interesaba ver. El Atlético tiene muchos buenos jugadores de ataque y ciertamente podrían causar muchos problemas a cualquier otro equipo si simplemente invierten más esfuerzo en sus ataques.
El City era el favorito para pasar a semifinales pero siempre pensé que el Atlético tenía muchas posibilidades de acabar este segundo partido con ellos en cabeza.
¿Cómo estuvo el partido?
El partido comenzó muy parejo, ambos equipos lograron crear algunos ataques pero ninguno de ellos llevó demasiado peligro. La actitud del Atlético fue muy diferente a la que tuvo en el primer partido, lo que hizo que este partido fuera mucho más entretenido.
Sinceramente, esperaba un ritmo más rápido al principio, y aunque el partido no fue lento, no fue tan intenso como esperaba. Sin embargo, también comencé a pensar que probablemente ambos equipos estaban ahorrando energía para la segunda mitad, especialmente el Atlético, que era el equipo obligado a marcar.

I decided to watch the match between Atletico and City because I was very interested in seeing Atlético's reaction after their defeat in the first match, and I also considerd these 2 teams to be important candidates to win the tournament. Plus, Liverpool already has an important advantage over Benfica and I thought there was little more to be done in that draw.
The match between City and Atletico is a match between different ways of playing football. This was made very clear in their previous match when all Atletico did was defend and all of what City did was an attack.
These different philosophies are both valid and they can both be successful, the issue in this match is that the team that loves to defend, Atletico, was forced to score goals and win the match if they want to continue to the semifinals. It would make no sense to them to continue to focus on the defense while they are losing. It might be a good strategy if they were winning, but if they are losing they would have to change big time.
This is what I was interested in seeing. Atletico has a lot of good attacking players and they could certainly cause many problems to any other team if they simply invest more effort into their attacks.
City was the favorite one to continue to the semifinals but I always thought Atletico had a good chance of finishing this second match with them in the lead.
How was the match?
The match started very evenly, with both teams managing to create a few attacks but neither of them carried too much danger. Atletico's attitude was very different than the one they had in the first match, which made this match much more entertaining.
I was honestly expecting a faster pace in the beginning, and even though the match wasn't slow, it wasn't as intense as I was expecting. However, I also started to think both teams were probably saving some energy for the second half, especially Atletico, which was the team obliged to score.
The best-attacking play in the first half happened at around the 29-minute mark. It was a City's attack from their right side, Foden received the ball inside the area, his shot was deflected, in the middle of several bounces Gundogan attempts a shot, it hits the post, then a header, and finally De Bruyne attempts another shot but the ball gets rejected by the defenders every time and ultimately it is sent outside the area.

During the first half, the majority of Atletico's attacks were with extremely fast and vertical plays, trying to take City's defenses by surprise and trying to take advantage of Felix's speed. The majority of the attacks and the best goal opportunities were in favor of City, but it was clear that Atletico's plans were very different than last time.
When the first half ended, I thought Atletico purposely saved some of their energy to attempt an explosive intensity in the second half. They could have been more insistent in their attacking attempts, and sometimes it felt as if City was the team with the 1 goal disadvantage.
There was only 1 moment in the first half where I saw Atletico clearly adopting an aggressive positioning, but City quickly did a counter-attack and this might have scared Atletico a little bit because, after that attack, Atletico's last defensive line never advanced past the midfield again.
For the playing style that Simeone loves to apply, I think he needs another attacking player that can provide more speed than Griezmann. A faster player could allow them to break the defensive line of their rivals with long passes and their counterattacks would be much deadlier this way. In this match at least, I think Atletico really suffered the lack of a player with explosive speed. They had Carrasco on the bench but he didn't enter the pitch until much later in the match.
The second half started with a good attack from Atletico finishing with a shot from Griezmann that went outside. It was a promising beginning, and I was expecting to see at least a couple of goals in this half. However, this didn't happen.
Atletico started to get serious about applying high pressure and play a more aggressive attacking football at around the 60 minute mark, and the team really improved near the 70 minute mark where some key substitutions took place.
Carrasco and Correa's entry around the 69 minute mark in exchange for Lodi and Griezmann was of big help to Atletico because it allow them to create better attacks, and it also caused City to hesitate a lot when sending their own players to Atletico's area. Atletico became much more aggressive as their desperation also grew because the minutes kept passing and they were unable to score the goal they needed. From this moment on, Atletico finally became the dominant team until the very end of the match.
Atletico's enjoyed its best moments towards the end of the match with several attacking plays that could have ended in a goal if they had some more luck. They were in full attacking mode, especially after Suarez went inside the pitch in exchange for Lemar. City was resisting as best as they could.
Aún con 10 jugadores el Atlético de Madrid siguió dominando los últimos minutos del partido, y gracias a Carrasco tuvo un peligroso lanzamiento de falta que pudo ser un gol espectacular pero Ederson, portero del City, pudo detenerlo con una tremendo salvada.
El partido entró en su período más caótico, divertido e intenso, con ambos equipos teniendo buenas oportunidades para anotar y perdiéndolas una y otra vez.
El Atlético dio todo lo que tenía en estos últimos minutos, por fin estaba viendo la intensidad que esperaba desde el principio, pero cambiaron de actitud demasiado tarde en mi opinión. Su último ataque fue muy desorganizado pero peligroso, y casi marcaron, pero como siempre, el balón siempre lo detenía el portero o los defensores. En los últimos minutos del partido el Atlético pudo acercarse al área del City, pero una vez allí le resultaba difícil y casi imposible realizar un disparo cómodo.
El City fue claramente el mejor equipo en general, tomó la iniciativa desde el primer partido, e incluso en este partido especialmente en la primera mitad. Una vez que el Atlético se desesperó lo suficiente, el City pudo adaptarse y brindar un excelente desempeño defensivo, neutralizando todo los ataques del Atlético y defendiendo efectivamente su ventaja de 1 gol.
En mi opinión, el mejor equipo entre estos 2 fue el City y merecen estar en semifinales contra el Real Madrid, en lo que seguramente será otra eliminatoria emocionante.

Even with 10 players Atletico Madrid continued to dominate the last few minutes of the match, and thanks to Carrasco, they had a dangerous free-kick that could have been an amazing goal but Ederson, City's goalkeeper, was able to stop it with an amazing save.
The match entered its most chaotic, fun and intense period with both teams having good opportunities to score, and missing them all time and time again.
Atletico gave everything they had in these last few minutes, I was finally seeing the intensity I was expecting from the beginning, but they changed their attitude too late in my opinion. Their last attack was super disorganized but dangerous nonetheless and they almost scored but as usual, the ball was always stopped by either the goalkeeper or the defenders. In the later minutes of the match Atletico was able to approach City's area, but once there, it was difficult and almost impossible for them to make a comfortable shot.
City's was clearly the best team overall, they took the initiative since the first match, and even in this match especially in the fist half. Once Atletico became desperate enough, City was able to adapt and provide an excellent defensive performance, neutralizing all of Atletico's attack and effectively defending their 1 goal advantage.
In my opinion, the best team between these 2 was City and they deserve to be in the semifinals against Real Madrid, in what will surely be another exciting draw.
What's next?
The semifinals will be played 2 weeks from now, and in the meantime, there will be national leagues and national cup matches all offer the different European competitions.
City will be playing against Liverpool for the FA Cup semifinals, and in the Spanish league, there will be an amazing match between Real Madrid and Sevilla this weekend.
