Antes de empezar el partido, el Real Madrid ya estaba en primera posición gracias a su increíble rendimiento en los últimos meses. El Atlético de Madrid, por su parte, estaba en la posición #4 pero con menos partidos jugados en comparación con los equipos del top 3. El Real Madrid tiene el mejor ataque de la competición y el Atlético de Madrid la tercera mejor defensa.
En la última década, la rivalidad entre estos 2 equipos se volvió más importante que nunca, ya que se enfrentaron en 2 finales de la Champions League, la primera en 2014 y la segunda en 2016, terminando ambas finales a favor del Real Madrid. Gracias a Simeone, el Atlético ha podido competir con el Real Madrid y el Barcelona y se ha consolidado como el tercer gran equipo español. Incluso han ganado un par de ligas en los últimos años, la última fue la temporada pasada.
Por todo esto, esperaba que este partido fuera muy intenso, pero no necesariamente con muchos goles. Esperaba ver al Real Madrid tomando la iniciativa, y luego ver a estos jugadores luchando ferozmente por los 3 puntos. Los partidos entre estos 2 equipos suelen ser muy igualados a la vez que muy intensos.
¿Cómo fue el partido?
El partido comenzó y el Atlético rápidamente fue mucho más intenso que el Real Madrid. Empezaron a realizar una presión alta muy eficiente y eso complicó las capacidades del Real Madrid para crear jugadas partiendo desde su propia área.
Se hizo evidente que el Atlético estaba invirtiendo mucha de su energía en el comienzo del partido, y eso me hizo pensar que hacia el final del partido, el equipo con más energía sería el Real Madrid. No sólo por su altísimo rendimiento en los últimos tiempos, sino porque tiene excelentes jugadores en el banquillo que podrían entrar en el campo y ofrecer un rendimiento muy similar.
El primer gol lo marcó el Real Madrid alrededor del minuto 16. Modric pudo recuperar el balón cerca de la línea del centro del campo mientras el Atlético se preparaba para crear una jugada de ataque, y tras la recuperación de Modric, Casemiro comenzó a correr hacia el área del Atlético. Benzema recibió el balón y se lo pasó rápidamente a Asensio, que se encontraba en la parte derecha del campo.

Due to all of this, I expected this match to be very intense, but not necessarily with a lot of goals. I was expecting to see Real Madrid taking the initiative, and then seeing these players fiercely battle each other for the 3 points. Matches between these 2 teams are usually very even as well as very intense.
How was the match?
The match started and Atletico quickly became much more intense than Real Madrid. They started to apply very efficient high pressure, and this complicated Real Madrid's capabilities to create plays starting from their own area.
It became obvious Atletico was investing a lot of their energy into the beginning of the match, and that made me think that towards the end of the match, the team with more energy would be Real Madrid. Not only due to their extremely high performance recently, but also because they have excellent players on the bench that could go into the pitch and provide very similar performance.
The first goal was scored by Real Madrid around the 16-minute mark. Modric was able to recover the ball near the midfield line while Atletico was preparing to create an attacking play, and after the recovery from Modric, Casemiro started to run towards Atletico's area. Benzema received the ball and quickly passed it to Asensio who was over the right side of the pitch.
El gol del Real Madrid se convirtió en todo un problema para el Atlético, creo que jugaron con tanta intensidad y aplicando una presión alta para intentar marcar el primer gol, y cuando se encontraron con una desventaja de 1 gol, sus planes debían cambiar. Aplicar una presión alta mientras se pierde aumenta el riesgo de sufrir otro gol si el otro equipo consigue crear un buen contraataque.

El Atlético de Madrid hizo un gran trabajo neutralizando la mayoría de los ataques del Real Madrid, pero también es cierto que todo el partido estuvo muy igualado, y simplemente no hubo muchos intentos de gol durante la primera parte. Real Madrid's goal became quite an issue for Atletico, I think they played so intensively and applying high pressure to try and score the first goal, and when they found themselves with a 1 goal disadvantage, their plans needed to change. Applying high pressure while losing increases the risk of suffering another goal if the other team manages to create a good counterattack.
The goal was the only important attacking opportunity Real Madrid had in the first half. Atletico Madrid did a great job neutralizing most of Real Madrid's attacks, but it is also true the entire match was very even, and there were simply not many goal attempts during the first half. Atletico Madrid's best opportunity, for example, was a free-kick by Griezmann stopped by Courtois.
The midfielders of both teams were all over the place, and the fact Real Madrid had Valverde and Camavinga waiting on the bench was a good advantage for them.
Benzema only lasted 45 minutes on the pitch due to his recent injury, and when the second half started Jovic was already on the pitch. Emocionalmente, el segundo gol neutralizó por completo cualquier impulso a favor del Atlético. Lo único que tenía que hacer el Real Madrid era ralentizar el partido todo lo posible y dejar que el tiempo jugara a su favor.
A lo largo del partido, Courtois hizo algunas paradas increíbles, fue especialmente útil parando algunos tiros libres y hacia el final del partido, incluso paró un gran disparo de Félix que iba directo a su cara. Ahora mismo, creo que es justo considerar a Courtois como el mejor portero del mundo, lo está parando prácticamente todo.
El Real Madrid demostró que no sólo es el mejor equipo español ahora mismo y con diferencia, sino que este equipo tiene tanto talento en el banquillo que no debería ser difícil para ellos dar algo de descanso a jugadores clave cuando sea el momento adecuado. Realmente parece que el Real Madrid va a ganar esta liga, aunque todavía es demasiado pronto para decirlo porque de los 38 partidos en total, los equipos han jugado sólo 17 como máximo. Así que aún queda mucho camino por recorrer.
Al final, el Real Madrid consiguió una merecida victoria, que mejora, aún más, su posición de líder de la liga. Este equipo lleva actualmente 10 victorias consecutivas entre la liga española y la Liga de Campeones, y no hay indicios de que vaya a parar pronto. Ahora bien, un rendimiento tan alto suele ser insostenible a largo plazo, y por eso tener jugadores de talento en el banquillo es útil para una temporada exitosa. Estoy seguro de que Ancelotti empezará a utilizar diferentes jugadores y a hacer algunas rotaciones importantes tarde o temprano.
¿Qué es lo siguiente?
La Liga de Campeones no va a volver hasta febrero, así que sólo habrá partidos de competiciones nacionales durante los próximos dos meses. Además de los partidos de liga, también habrá partidos de la Supercopa de España en la que el Real Madrid se enfrentará al Barcelona a principios del próximo año, y los partidos de la Copa del Rey también comenzarán en enero.

This goal changed everything, Atletico's attacks stopped being so dangerous, and Real Madrid started to look more solid than ever before. Emotionally, the second goal completely neutralized any momentum in favor of Atletico. The only thing Real Madrid needed to do was to slow the match as much as possible and let time play in its favor.
Throughout the match, Courtois did some amazing saves, he was especially useful stopping some free kicks and towards the end of the match, he even stopped a great shot from Felix that went straight to his face. Right now, I believe it is fair to consider Courtois as the best goalkeeper in the world, he is stopping pretty much everything.
Real Madrid proved that it is not only the best Spanish team right now and by far, but this team has so much talent on the bench that it shouldn't be hard for them to give some rest to key players when the time is right. It really seems Real Madrid is going to win this league, although it is still too early to tell because of the 38 matches in total the teams have only played 17 at most. So there is still a long way to go.
In the end, Real Madrid obtained a well-deserved victory, that improves, even more, their position as the leader of the league. This team currently has 10 consecutive victories between the Spanish league and the Champions League and there is no sign of them stopping any time soon. Now, such high performance is usually unsustainable in the long term, and this is why having talented players on the bench is useful for a successful season. I am sure Ancelotti will begin using different players and doing some important rotations sooner or later.
What's next?
The Champions League isn't going to return until February, so there will only be matches from national competitions for the next couple of months. Besides league matches, there will also be Spanish Super Cup matches where Real Madrid is going to face Barcelona at the beginning of next year, and Copa del Rey matches will also begin in January.

Una victoria muy importante para las aspiraciones del real Madrid, ha vencido a sus rivales directos en la competencia, el conjunto blanco ha sumado victorias importantes.
Han mejorado mucho en defensa en comparación a partidos anteriores, me gustó el trabajo del medio campo también, resaltando la recuperación de Modric que es vital para la contra del primer gol, y por supuesto Kroos manejando los tiempos.
Esta victoria le pone nuevamente en lo alto de Europa y con una muy buena diferencia en la liga, esperando lo que pueda hacer el Sevilla
La defensa ha mejorado mucho desde el regreso de Mendy, ese lateral es clave para que el Madrid se mantenga solido. Y Modric está mejor que nunca, ojala siga así.
