El Real Madrid viene obteniendo resultados muy positivos en estas últimas semanas. Benzema y Vinicius están teniendo la mejor temporada de sus vidas y los centrocampistas también han sido muy sólidos. El único punto débil hasta ahora ha estado en el lado defensivo, pero creo que esto podría solucionarse a su debido tiempo.
El Real Madrid jugó con una extraña alineación defensiva en este partido, con Nacho como lateral izquierdo y Valverde como lateral derecho. Esas no son sus posiciones naturales, y me costó entender por qué Alaba no jugaba como lateral izquierdo con Nacho en el centro de la defensa. Parecía que Alaba y Nacho podrían haber cambiado de posición y eso hubiera sido mejor para el equipo en mi opinión.
Esas extrañas decisiones de Ancelotti se deben a que Mendy, que es el principal lateral izquierdo del equipo, aún no se ha recuperado de su lesión y Miguel Gutiérrez, que es un joven y prometedor lateral izquierdo, ya acumula suficientes minutos y Ancelotti no quiere arriesgarlo en este partido. Los jugadores jóvenes necesitan un poco de protección de la presión y eso es lo que está haciendo Ancelotti con Gutiérrez.
En el lateral derecho, Carvajal, que es el principal jugador de esa posición, está lesionado, y la actuación de Vázquez no ha sido lo suficientemente buena, por lo que el técnico decidió poner a Valverde, que es un gran centrocampista, poderoso y un jugador muy confiable.
Me alegré de ver a Vinicius y Rodrygo jugar juntos, esos son 2 jugadores brasileños extremadamente prometedores, y tenerlos a los dos jugando como extremos hace que el Real Madrid sea un equipo mucho más peligroso.
Mi expectativa era ver un partido muy igualado con una victoria del Real Madrid con solo 1 gol de ventaja, máximo 2 goles. El Villarreal es un equipo muy sólido y derrotarlos no es tarea fácil. Sin embargo, el Real Madrid era mi favorito para ganar simplemente porque lo ha estado haciendo muy bien hasta ahora en esta temporada.
¿Cómo estuvo el partido?
El inicio del partido fue muy parejo como se esperaba. El Villarreal es un gran equipo por lo que, aunque los jugadores del Real Madrid están en gran forma, está claro que es una tarea difícil derrotar a este rival.
El Villarreal jugó mejor en la primera parte. Pudieron neutralizar cualquier peligro de Vinicius y Rodrygo. Benzema fue incapaz de crear jugadas de ataque importantes, y el trabajo defensivo del Villarreal fue simplemente de clase mundial.
La jugada de ataque más importante del Villarreal fue anulada por un fuera de juego pero la mayoría de los intentos de gol fueron a favor de ese equipo. El Real Madrid, por su parte, intentó algunos tiros pero todos fueron sin peligro real. Hubo un potencial penalti contra Nacho pero no fue falta según el árbitro.
Apostaría a que Emery, entrenador del Villarreal, estaba muy contento con la actuación de su equipo en la primera parte. Jugaba un poco mejor que el Real Madrid, tenía más posesión de balón y sus jugadas de ataque eran más peligrosas. El Real Madrid tuvo más tiros en la primera parte, pero ninguno de ellos salió a puerta.
El Real Madrid podía marcar en cualquier momento teniendo en cuenta todos los jugadores talentosos de su plantilla, pero estaba claro que no se sentían cómodos en el partido.
En el segundo tiempo, Rodrygo fue enviado al banquillo y Camavinga se fue al campo. El Real Madrid también trasladó la posición de su línea defensiva a un lugar mucho más agresivo. Supongo que el cambio de estrategia consistió en evitar que el Villarreal moviera el balón en el lado del campo del Real Madrid e intentar asfixiar a sus defensores bombardeándolos constantemente con nuevas jugadas de ataque. El Real Madrid puede darse el lujo de tener su línea defensiva en el medio del campo gracias a sus jugadores defensivos rápidos y potentes.
Este cambio fue de gran ayuda para el Real Madrid. En la segunda parte el Madrid tuvo más posesión de balón, y tuvo muchas más jugadas de ataque que el Villarreal, estuvo a punto de marcar un gol en varias ocasiones pero por desgracia para ellos, todos sus intentos fallaron. El momento más peligroso vino de un tiro libre, Asensio centró el balón al área y Militao lanzó un cabezazo muy potente pero se fue fuera de la red.
Los jugadores del Villarreal se estaban cansando y la mayor parte de la energía que les quedaba la usaron para defender el 0-0. Lograr un empate ante el Real Madrid en el estadio Santiago Bernabéu es definitivamente un buen resultado para el Villarreal, por lo que durante la segunda parte vimos principalmente al Madrid atacando y al Villarreal defendiendo.
A pesar de que el Real Madrid tuvo muchos más ataques en la segunda parte, el portero del Villarreal, Rulli, no tuvo mucho trabajo que hacer porque, al igual que en la primera parte, la mayoría de los tiros del Real Madrid salieron fuera. De hecho, las mejores paradas del partido fueron las de Courtois, que detuvo 2 tiros peligrosos 1 en cada tiempo.
Muchas de las jugadas de ataque del Real Madrid terminaron con un centro al área, y como Albiol, un defensa central del Villarreal, es más alto que todos los jugadores de ataque del Madrid, tuvo mucho éxito en enviar esos centros al exterior y, por lo tanto, neutralizar fácilmente a los ataques del Real Madrid.
El partido terminó con el Real Madrid tratando incesantemente de marcar su primer gol, pero al final no pudo hacerlo. Creo que la eliminatoria fue un resultado justo, el Real Madrid fue mejor en la segunda parte y en general un poco mejor que el Villarreal, pero el Villarreal hizo un trabajo defensivo increíble y también tuvo los 2 tiros más peligrosos del partido.

¿Qué sigue?
El próximo partido que planeo ver es este martes, el Real Madrid jugará contra el Sheriff Tiraspol, que es un equipo moldavo muy pequeño. Espero que Ancelotti haga muchas rotaciones en ese partido y, con suerte, podremos ver a jugadores que suelen estar en el banquillo teniendo muchos minutos.
Real Madrid played with a strange defensive lineup in this match, with Nacho as the left-back and Valverde as the right back. Those aren't their naturals positions, and it was hard for me to understand why Alaba wasn't playing as a left-back with Nacho playing at the center of the defense. It seemed like Alaba and Nacho could have switched positions and that would have been better for the team in my view.
Those strange decisions from Ancelotti are because Mendy, who is the main left-back of the team, hasn't yet recovered from his injury and Miguel Gutierrez, who is a young promising left-back, has already accumulated enough minutes and Ancelotti didn't want to risk him on this match. Young players require a bit of protection from the pressure and that's what Ancelotti is doing with Gutierrez.
On the right-back, Carvajal who is the main player for that position, is injured, and Vazquez's performance hasn't been good enough so the coach decided to put Valverde there, who is a great and powerful midfielder and a very reliable player.
I was happy to see Vinicius and Rodrygo playing together, those are 2 extremely promising Brazilian players, and having both of them playing as wingers makes Real Madrid a much more dangerous team.
My expectation was to see a very even match with a victory for Real Madrid with only 1 goal advantage, max 2 goals. Villarreal is a very solid team and defeating them isn't an easy feat. However, Real Madrid was my favorite to win simply because they have been doing great so far in this season.
How was the match?
The beginning of the match was very even as expected. Villarreal is a great team so even though Real Madrid's players are in great shape, it would be a hard task to defeat this rival.
Villarreal played better in the first half. They were able to neutralize any danger from Vinicius and Rodrygo. Benzema was unable to create important attacking plays, and Villarreal's defensive work was simply world-class.
The most important attacking play by Villarreal was disallowed by an offside but the majority of the goal attempts were in favor of that team. Real Madrid, on the other hand, attempted some shots but all of them were without any real danger. There was a potential penalty against Nacho but it wasn't a foul according to the referee.
I would bet that Emery, Villarreal's coach, was very happy with the performance of his team in the first half. They played a bit better than Real Madrid, they had more ball possession, and their attacking plays were most dangerous. Real Madrid had more shots in the first half, but none of those went on target.
Real Madrid could score at any time given all the talented players in their squad, but it was clear they weren't feeling comfortable in the match.
In the second half, Rodrygo was sent to the bench and Camavinga went to the pitch. Real Madrid also moved the position of its defensive line to a much more aggressive place. I suppose the change of strategy consisted of preventing Villarreal from moving the ball in Real Madrid's side of the pitch and try to suffocate their defensive players by constantly bombarding them with new attacking plays. This was a high-risk decision by Ancelotti because this leaves them vulnerable to fast counter attacks but that's where Militao, Alaba, and Nacho's speed come into play. Real Madrid can afford to have their defensive line in the middle of the pitch thanks to its fast and powerful defensive players.
This change was of big help to Real Madrid. In the second half, Madrid had more ball possession, and they had many more attacking plays than Villarreal, they almost scored a goal on several occasions but unluckily for them, all of their attempts failed. The most dangerous moment came from a free-kick, Asensio crossed the ball into the area and Militao gave a very powerful header but it went outside the net.
Villarreal players were getting tired and most of their remaining energy was to defend the 0-0 tie. Achieving a tie against Real Madrid in the Santiago Bernabeu stadium is definitely a good result for Villarreal, so during the second half we mostly saw Madrid attacking and Villarreal defending.
Despite the fact Real Madrid had many more attacks in the second half, Villarreal's goalkeeper, Rulli, didn't have much work to do because just as in the first half, most of Real Madrid's shots went outside. In fact, the best saves of the match were from Courtois, who stopped 2 dangerous shots 1 on each half.
Many of the attacking plays of Real Madrid ended with a cross into the area, and since Albiol, a Villarreal central defender, is taller than all of Madrid's attacking players, he was very successful in sending those crosses outside and therefore, easily neutralizing Real Madrid's attacks.
The match ended with Real Madrid incessantly trying to score their first goal but ultimately they were unable to do so. I think the tie was a fair result, Real Madrid was better in the second half and overall was a bit better than Villarreal, but Villarreal did amazing defensive work and they also had the 2 most dangerous shots of the match.
Since any team could have won this match a tie seems fair to me. Villarreal has tied 5 of their 6 matches so far in this league season which puts them in position 10, while Real Madrid is currently in the first position with 5 victories and 2 ties.
What's next?
The next match I plan to watch is this Tuesday, Real Madrid will be playing against Sheriff Tiraspol, which is a very small Moldovan team. I am expecting Ancelotti to do a lot of rotations in that match and hopefully, we will be able to see players who are usually on the bench having a lot of minutes.

It is not as good after losing Messi but if Real Madrid manages to sign Mbappe and Haaland next summer, it will be the best league once again I believe.
