En este partido, Benzema ni siquiera fue incluido en el banquillo por lo que se le dio un descanso completo para este fin de semana. Esperaba ver a Jovic jugando como delantero centro pero sorprendentemente, el elegido fue Mariano. Esto no es una buena noticia para Jovic en lo más mínimo porque si Ancelotti prefiere a Mariano antes que a Jovic, y ninguno de los dos juega con regularidad porque Benzema siempre está jugando, entonces realmente dudo que Jovic, que costó alrededor de 60 millones, tenga algún futuro en este equipo. A no ser que tenga una lesión y esa sea la razón por la que no fue incluido en la alineación, yo diría que su tiempo en el Real Madrid está cerca de su fin.
Otro cambio importante fue tener a Marcelo como lateral izquierdo y a Vázquez como lateral derecho. Marcelo fue desde hace varios años, el mejor lateral izquierdo del mundo, sobre todo en ataque. Pero su rendimiento ha ido bajando con el tiempo, y lo que produce en el ataque ya no compensa su falta de capacidad defensiva. Por eso no ha jugado mucho en los últimos meses. Incluirlo como lateral izquierdo, significa que el entrenador quiere que el equipo esté muy centrado en el ataque.
¿Cómo fue el partido?
Rodrygo fue el jugador del Real Madrid más activo en ataque, normalmente es Vinicius, pero esta vez vi a Rodrygo un poco más participativo, e incluso hizo el primer disparo del partido. Lamentablemente para él, no duró mucho en el campo porque se lesionó y tuvo que ser sustituido alrededor de los 17 minutos. A cambio de él, entró en el campo Asensio.
El primer gol ocurrió alrededor del minuto 21 y fue una jugada muy rápida. Casemiro intercepta un pase en el centro del campo e inmediatamente pasa el balón a Mariano, que a su vez hace un pase instantáneo de tacón a Vinicius y esto le permite correr directamente hacia el área con suficiente ángulo para hacer un tiro cruzado y enviar el balón al interior de la red. La combinación entre Mariano y Vinicius fue excelente y la velocidad de toda la jugada fue de las más rápidas que he visto en toda la temporada para este equipo. Alrededor de 5 minutos después, Mariano casi marca el segundo gol, pero tras regatear al portero no tenía ángulo para disparar y el balón se fue al lateral de la red.
Dado que el Real Madrid se centró principalmente en el ataque, esto dejó una gran cantidad de trabajo defensivo que hacer a Alaba y Militao, los 2 defensores centrales del equipo. Y realizaron un gran trabajo parando los ataques del Elche desde la primera parte, esta pareja de defensas se está acostumbrando a jugar juntos, y están desarrollando sus propios automatismos además de entenderse para complementarse. La segunda parte fue bastante parecida a la primera al principio, con el Real Madrid centrado sobre todo en el ataque para aumentar su ventaja, y el Elche teniendo algunas jugadas de ataque que podrían haber acabado mejor con un poco más de suerte. Las jugadas más peligrosas del Real Madrid fueron siempre por la banda izquierda con Vinicius una vez que Rodrygo salió del campo en la primera parte.
Hubo un punto de inflexión importante en el minuto 63 cuando Raúl Guti recibe una tarjeta roja por una falta contra Kroos mientras el Real Madrid estaba tratando de iniciar una nueva jugada desde su propia área. Esta tarjeta roja dejó al Elche con una desventaja importante, y para ellos, ahora era más difícil que nunca empatar este partido. Poco después, el Real Madrid marcó su segundo gol.
El segundo gol también fue anotado por Vinicius y ocurrió alrededor de los 73 minutos. Algo que noté en el partido contra el Barcelona y que también se repitió en este partido, es que cuando el Real Madrid logra una ventaja de 2 goles, el equipo parece relajarse y deja de estar muy concentrado en el partido. Alrededor del minuto 85, Casemiro y Kroos comenzaban a crear una nueva jugada desde su propia área, pero a ambos les ocurrió una tontería. Casemiro intenta un pase hacia el lateral del campo, pero es interceptado por un rival y luego Kroos no consigue parar el pase al delantero del Elche. Los 2 centrales estaban lejos de esa zona y el Elche pudo marcar su primer gol. Fue una tontería porque Casemiro y Kroos consiguieron dejar al delantero del Elche solo ante el portero.
El rendimiento de Casemiro durante esta temporada no ha sido tan sólido comparado con el de hace un par de años. Se trata de un jugador muy importante porque es el principal centrocampista defensivo y es clave a la hora de frenar los ataques del rival. Sin embargo, por alguna razón, está cometiendo más errores de lo habitual en esta temporada. Supongo que se trata de un problema temporal y que pronto recuperará su máximo rendimiento.
Por otro lado, Kroos, a pesar de ser un excelente centrocampista con grandes pases y movimientos tácticos de clase mundial, siempre ha sido un jugador lento en el sentido de que un partido de ritmo rápido a veces puede abrumarlo y el fútbol de hoy se basa principalmente en movimientos rápidos. Incluso durante este partido contra el Elche, que puede considerarse con justicia un rival menor, hubo algunos momentos en los que Kroos perdió el balón gracias a su lentitud. Incluso en el gol del Elche, si Kroos fuera más rápido, habría podido parar el balón antes de que llegara al delantero del Elche. El Real Madrid ahora mismo tiene 2 centrocampistas jóvenes y rápidos, Valverde y Camavinga, y su importancia en el equipo seguramente aumentará a corto plazo, bueno, Valverde ya es un jugador bastante importante.
Al final, el Real Madrid consiguió una justa victoria gracias a Vinicius, pero todavía hay cosas que puede mejorar, como su concentración cuando tiene una cómoda ventaja, y como se demostró en el partido anterior, todavía puede mejorar la calidad y consistencia de sus jugadas de ataque. La semana que viene por fin vuelve la Champions League así que pienso ver 1 o 2 partidos entre el martes y el miércoles. Muchos equipos necesitarán ganar varios puntos si quieren clasificarse para la siguiente ronda así que este torneo empieza a ser realmente emocionante.

In this match, Benzema wasn't even included on the bench so he was given a full rest for this weekend. I was expecting to see Jovic playing as the central striker but surprisingly, the chosen one was Mariano. This isn't good news for Jovic in the least because if Ancelotti prefers Mariano over Jovic, and neither of them plays on a regular basis because Benzema is always playing, then I really doubt Jovic, who costed around 60 million, has any future in this team. Unless he has an injury and that was the reason he wasn't included in the lineup, I would say his time at Real Madrid is near its end.
Another important change was having Marcelo as the left-back and Vazquez as the right-back. Marcelo was several years ago, the best left-back in the world, especially when attacking. But his performance has been decreasing with time, and what he produces in the attack no longer compensates for his lack of defensive abilities. This is why he hasn't been playing much in recent months. Including him as the left-back, means the coach wants the team to be very focused on the attack.
How was the match?
Rodrygo was the most active attacking Real Madrid player, it is usually Vinicius, but this time I saw Rodrygo being a little bit more participative, and he even did the first shot of the match. Sadly for him, he didn't last much on the pitch because he got injured and had to be substituted around the 17-minute mark. In exchange for him, Asensio entered the pitch.
The first goal happened around the 21-minute mark and it was a very fast play. Casemiro intercepts a pass in the midfield and immediately passes the ball to Mariano who then makes an instant backheel pass to Vinicius and this allows him to run straight into the area with enough angle to make a cross-shot and send the ball inside the net. The combination between Mariano and Vinicius was excellent and the speed of the entire play was among the fastest I have seen in the entire season for this team. Around 5 minutes later Mariano almost scores the second goal but after dribbling the goalkeeper he had no angle to shoot and the ball went to the side of the net.
Since Real Madrid was mostly focused on attacking, that left a lot of defensive work to be done by Alaba and Militao, the 2 central defenders of the team. And they did a great job stopping Elche's attacks since the first half, this couple of defenders are getting used to playing together, and they are developing their own automatic moves as well as understanding each other in order to complement themselves. Elche did have some interesting attacking plays throughout the match, but the defensive work from the 2 central defenders is worth mentioning.
The second half was pretty much like the first one in the beginning, with Real Madrid mostly focusing on the attack in order to increase their advantage, and Elche having a few attacking plays that could have ended better with a little more luck. Real Madrid's most dangerous plays were always from the left side with Vinicius once Rodrygo left the pitch in the first half.
There was an important inflection point in the 63-minute mark when Raul Guti receives a red card for a foul against Kroos while Real Madrid was trying to begin a new play from their own area. This red card left Elche with an important disadvantage, and for them, it was now more difficult than ever before to tie this match. Shortly after this, Real Madrid scored its second goal.
The second goal was also scored by Vinicius and happened around the 73-minute mark. He received inside the area a good pass from Modric and used his speed to accelerate in order to gain some angle that could allow him to shoot, and with the tip of his right foot, he sent the ball slightly above the goalkeeper as he was going to the ground trying to stop the goal. It was a beautiful play and another excellent goal for Vini in this match. This player is getting better and better, and if he continues like this he might become one of the best in the world.
Something I noticed in the match against Barcelona and that also happened again in this match, is that when Real Madrid achieves a 2 goal advantage, the team appears to relax and stops being very focused in the match. Around the 85 minute mark, Casemiro and Kroos were beginning to create a new play from their own area but something silly happened to both of them. Casemiro attempts a pass to the side of the pitch, but it is intercepted by a rival and then Kroos is unable to stop the pass to Elche's striker. The 2 central defenders were far from this zone and Elche was able to score its first goal. It was silly because Casemiro and Kroos managed to leave Elche's striker alone in front of the goalkeeper.
Casemiro's performance during this season hasn't been as solid compared to a couple of years ago. This is a very important player because he is the main defensive midfielder and is key when stopping the rival's attacks. However, for some reason, he is committing more mistakes than usual in this season. I guess this is just a temporary problem and he will soon enough recover his top performance.
Kroos on the other hand, despite being an excellent midfielder with great passes and world-class tactical moves, has always been a slow player in the sense that a fast-paced match can sometimes overwhelm him and today's football is mostly based on fast-paced moves. Even during this match against Elche, which can be fairly considered a minor rival, there were some moments that Kroos lost the ball thanks to his slow speed. Even in Elche's goal, if Kroos was faster, he would have been able to stop the ball before it arrived at Elche's striker. Real Madrid right now has 2 young and fast midfielders, Valverde and Camavinga, and their importance in the team will surely increase in the near term, well, Valverde is already quite an important player.
In the end, Real Madrid achieved a fair victory thanks to Vinicius but there are still things they can improve such as their focus when they have a comfortable advantage, and as was proved in the previous match, they can still improve the quality and consistency of their attacking plays. I believe Ancelotti is doing a good job so far as the coach, and my main doubt after this match is what's happening with Jovic and why he didn't even play 1 single minute? That's worrisome because I believe that striker has a lot of potential to be a great player.
What's next?
The next week the Champions League is finally back so I plan to watch 1 or 2 matches between Tuesday and Wednesday. Many teams will need to win several points if they want to classify for the next round so this tournament is starting to get really exciting.
