Messi stays in Barcelona! Is this good or bad for the team?

Messi has officially announced he stays in Barcelona. He doesn't inform if he will stay for 1 year or until he retires but what's sure is that this season he will continue to be a Barcelona player. His contract with Barcelona ends next year so unless he signs a new one he will be able to leave for free next year without any legal issue.

In the interview, he says he wanted to leave the team because he doesn't think there is a good project in Barcelona. He strongly criticizes Barcelona's president, and he explains that the reason why he has decided to stay is that the only way to leave the team would involve the courts and he didn't want to go to court against his lifelong club. I think it is very clear that Messi isn't happy in this team and I have always been against keeping unhappy players. But Barcelona's president thinks otherwise and he forced Messi to stay or go to courts. Messi chose the peaceful option.

At first sight, it could be obvious that Messi's decision is good for Barcelona but apparently the club has some financial problems and it is also in need of some reconstruction of the squad, they clearly need new young players and a rebuilt team. With Messi, it would be hard to rebuild the team because his salary is extremely high and thanks to the pandemic Barcelona's finances are worst than ever. So hiring a lot of new young players would be impossible as of now.

Some people say it would have been better for Barcelona to sell Messi and then use the money to start rebuilding the team with young players, but that will probably not happen now that Messi is staying. In the short term, keeping Messi is the best option to opt for trophies, but in the long term perhaps it would have been better to sell Messi and invest that money in players for the future.

Do you think Messi's decision is the best for Barcelona? Or would it have been better to sell him for a good price?

Well that was a big fuss about nothing!

I'd have loved to have seen him in the English Premier League but think it's best for him to stay at Barca until he hands those magical boots up.

La Liga hold the contract rights of the players apparently and they are reluctant to let their star player leave. I think Messi and Barca are wasting their time now on this. Why would you keep someone who obviously doesn't want to be at the club. He wont perform and most likely will be let free in the January window. Barca are stupid and rather get $50 million for him than nothing plus save on his salary each month.
