Smocze drzewo / Dragon tree [#125] POL/ENG

Większość wczorajszego dnia przeleżałem na plaży. Chwile mi jednak zajęło zanim znalazłem taką z piaskiem i łagodnym zejściem. Ostatecznie wylądowałem w Puerto de la Cruz, w połowie północnego wybrzeża. Po tej stronie brzeg jest ogólnie dużo bardziej stromy i kamienisty, a ocean bardziej burzliwy. Po drodze ba miejsce odwiedziłem uroczą miejscowość Icod de los Vinos, zaznaczyłem sobie wcześniej na mapie pewne bardzo specjalne drzewo, które rośnie właśnie tutaj, a bardzo chciałem je zobaczyć.

Dracena smocza (Dracena Drago) jest endemitem występującym tylko na Kanarach i Maderze, a i tu występuje tylko kilkaset egzemplarzy, roślina zagrożona jest więc wyginięciem. W ciągu ostatnich trzech tygodni widywałem ją głównie w ogrodach i przy drogach, bardzo rzadko dziko rosnącą. Na Teneryfie Smocze drzewo ma szczególny status, roślina jest symbolem tej wyspy.

Po pewnych trudnościach ze znalezieniem parkingu skierowałem się w stronę zaznaczonego na mapie punktu, szybko zauważyłem charakterystyczną sylwetkę parę przecznic dalej i poszedłem w tamtą stronę. Na tablicy informacyjnej przeczytałem, że drzewo ma 300lat, 16m wysokości i w 1961 roku prawie zostało ścięte na polecenie właściciela terenu. Na szczęście szybko to zauważono, wycinkę wstrzymano, a miasto odkupiło działkę, ogrodziło drzewo i zabezpieczyło ubytki.

Na początku ubiegłego roku ktoś znowu zaatakował drzewo. Zostało ono wtedy szczelnie ogrodzone i otoczone kamerami monitoringu miejskiego. U podnóża wielkiej draceny małe smoki wygrzewają się w słońcu, jak ja je dobrze rozumiem.

Jednak to drzewko to tylko małe dziecko młodsze o całe 700 lat od swojego praprzodka zachowanego w ogrodzie zlokalizowanym 100m obok. I byłbym pojechał dalej, gdyby nie moja pierwsza w życiu rozmowa po hiszpańsku. Sklepów nie liczę. Zagadał mnie sympatyczny lokals i wskazał drogę do punktu widokowego, skąd można zobaczyć starszą dracenę bez płacenia za wstęp do ogrodu. Centrum miasteczka obsadzone jest wieloma egzotycznymi roślinami i stanowi sporą atrakcję turystyczną, uliczni grajkowie, stragany z pamiątkami. Nawet dość estetycznie i sympatucznie, natomiast jakoś mi to nie pasowało na spotkanie z antycznym drzewem. Mimo, że ten okaz jest większy i ma taki starożytny wygląd to jakoś wciąż byłem pod wrażeniem tej młodszej draceny zlokalizowanej w bardzo spokojnym miejscu, nieco na uboczu.

I spent most of yesterday on the beach. However, it took me a while before I found one with sand and a gentle descent. Eventually I landed in Puerto de la Cruz, halfway up the north coast. On this side, the shore is generally much steeper and rockier, and the ocean more turbulent. On the way, I visited the charming town of Icod de los Vinos, I had previously marked on the map a very special tree that grows right here, and I really wanted to see it.

Dracaena Drago is an endemic found only in the Canary Islands and Madeira, and there are only a few hundred specimens here, so the plant is threatened with extinction. In the last three weeks I have seen it mainly in gardens and along roads, very rarely growing wild. In Tenerife, the dragon tree has a special status, the plant is a symbol of this island. After some difficulty finding parking, I headed towards the point marked on the map, quickly spotted a distinctive silhouette a few blocks away, and headed in that direction. On the information board I read that the tree is 300 years old, 16 m high and in 1961 it was almost cut down on the order of the landowner. Fortunately, it was quickly noticed, the felling was stopped, and the city bought the plot, fenced the tree and secured the losses.

Early last year, someone attacked the tree again. It was then tightly fenced and surrounded by city monitoring cameras. At the foot of the great dracaena, little dragons bath in the sun. I understand them so much!

However, this tree is only a small child, 700 years younger than its ancestor preserved in the garden located 100 meters away. And I would have gone further, if not for my first conversation in Spanish in my life. I don't count shops. I was approached by a nice local and showed me the way to the viewpoint, from where you can see the older dracaena without paying to enter the garden. The center of the town is planted with many exotic plants and is a major tourist attraction, street musicians, souvenir stalls. Even quite aesthetically and pleasantly, but somehow it did not suit me to meet an ancient tree. Even though this specimen is larger and has such an ancient look, somehow I was still impressed by this younger dracaena located in a very quiet place, slightly off the beaten track.
