Nov. 2, 21: Routine, Teaching, Model A Parts Arrive, Oculus, and Games

I can say that my sleep has been relatively stable…unfortunately, that means getting up at like four thirty. 😭 Yet another hour short for today and it’s starting to catch up. I dragged hard in the afternoon and if Mom hadn’t been coming over, I definitely would have laid down.

The morning routine was fairly usual. Being up early again, I did consider loading up the (hopefully last) load of metal, but I wasn’t really feeling it today. Did see some nice bullish moves in the crypto markets today, hope to see some continuation and follow through, but time will tell. ETH seems to be off to the races and I’m praying that MATIC catches the wave a little bit. 🤞

Instead of loading and dumping metal, I got an early head start on my post for the day. Normally on days when I have early teaching I don’t end up being able to do a proper post, but I was happy with that one.

No problem heading to or from work. Had Calculus II today and we started in earnestly looking at series representations of functions. We’re still a class or two ahead of the game, so going to slow it down a little and work on some more of the same stuff next class.

Got home and grabbed some lunch and found that my package was delivered out on the front porch! 🥳 Got three hundred bucks worth of new parts for the Model A! Got a brand new, complete distributor…was very pleased with that, has the capacitor installed and everything! 🤩

One of our neighbors borrowed the crank from my Dad years and years ago but despite being repeatedly asked to return it, he hasn’t. It was only about twenty dollars and I got a brand spanking new one, so problem solved. That also allowed me to rotate the engine for the first time in forty years!

I didn’t have to crank it too hard and it turned fairly smooth, but there’s something grinding in the flywheel casing. At first I was thinking it’s probably mouse junk down in there, but the more I thought about it the less likely I think that would be to make the sound I’m hearing.

Double good news is that the clutch pedal AND the brake pedal both broke free! Unfortunately, I have a very strong feeling that it’s the clutch plate that’s grinding and making that noise. Not going to be way to get at that! (Not exactly sure how to feel about that - on the one hand, small victories, the engine rotated, on the other getting more evidence of a very serious issue.)

Got a complete new engine gasket set as well! Most important right now are the head gasket and the oil pan gaskets. I am faced with another problem in that replacing the timing gear cover gasket (part of which I have destroyed) requires taking the whole cover off, in which case the engine is no longer supported by the frame in the front. 😱 Really don’t want to replace the whole thing, but don’t want to risk oil leaks either…thinking I’ll need to devise some safe way to jack up the engine and do it that way (keep the engine in place and just remove the front cover/support).

I also got the gasket for the oil pump. I’d expected that getting the gasket would mean a clear and finite goal that I could achieve immediately, i.e. putting the oil pump back together. However, it’s only but like a thin piece of paper and I’m not sure whether to just put it on or whether to use some gasket sealer as well. Spent quite a bit of time researching and found about a fifty/fifty split saying you should or shouldn’t use goop. 🥴 Still not sure what I should do.

Beautiful! Just got to drop her in and then time it. I have the distributor cap, so that should be alright.

Mom came over for a bit in the afternoon and I helped her with printing some stuff out and fixing her Facebook. Nobody was seeing anything she shared…she had it set to post “only me.” 🤣 I spent some time trying to clear out the hundreds of pages she had sitting open in Safari. 😂

Just after she left we got our first snow ❄️ of the year. 😢 It didn’t last terribly long and certainly didn’t stick to the ground, but that’s just the beginning.

I kind of got stymied with the grinding on the car, and didn’t really know the best way to deal with the paper gaskets, so I didn’t actually do anything else for the moment. Instead, I played some Oculus for a while.

Went back and got some new high scores on Beat Saber and was pleased to see that they’d updated and changed the backgrounds and tile colors and stuff.

Speaking of updates, Zombieland got some new levels and challenges as well, so I mostly played that. I finally beat the campaign properly as well; I hadn’t actually been able to clear the last level. 😀 Beating it did unlock another level of upgrades for the guns, which is fantastic and should really help make some of the challenges easier, but they’re expensive, so I have some run-throughs to do to afford them.

Wenche got home and I ran down to the store to get us some smokes while she made us an omelette for dinner and we watched some more Scream Queens until bedtime (and I played my Splinterlands quest).

Well, hrm. I guess that it’s a function of dShitty math to keep the shittiness at a consistent level…for as much income as I’ve received above what was stated the last few days, I’ve now received below. Not sure why I even still bother with this, been nothing but complaining for as long as I can remember.

I suppose I’m also still not done complaining about the absolute asshole moves that CryptoBrewmaster has made. Seems like a lot of these play to earn schemes turn out to be unsustainable in some way or another; while the decision to put an ASH in front of all base functions of income in the game may not have been out of the desire to create more capital controls, it has that effect.

Still just plodding along on Rising Star, maybe slogging would be a better description? Dunno, getting a whole lot of nowhere fast it seems.

Played some Splinterlands in the evening. Was certainly a more frustrating day than yesterday and I lost ground in the rankings, but I did get my quest done for the day.

My quest for today was three wins without neutral monsters, so it really shouldn’t have taken me that long, but after several losing streaks, I did finally end my suffering. Got a new epic Dragon card, but I was surprised that it was only worth like five bucks.

Decided to pull the trigger again and bought all my vouchers worth of packs. I have a feeling I’m likely to regret it, but for now I’ve got about 350 new cards coming and you never know what might be in them (four commons and a rare 😆). Anyway, it does help with SPS points as well and they gave it all to me, so it’s fine.

Got my stats for the last week. Kinda’ weird that my active minutes were up by so much when overall everything was down…the green arrow on sleep is an added slap in the face considering how rough it’s been (to be fair, I guess last week was more or less consistent, it’s this week that’s short).
