Getting Back in Form

One of the best parts about teaching in high school is the fun in the job sometimes.

This week was sports week and our students had a friendly match with another school in the community. I’d been seeing them train every day since we came back from the Xmas break, but I didn’t really know what for.

In a chat with a colleague staff a few days ago, I was informed of the said match between our students and their neighbors. I was excited, but not as much as I was when I found out after the friendly match, we’ll have a Staff vs Student match the week following that.

My excitement was because there’s not really anything fun to do around here because the community here is very rural and mostly quiet and boring. But accompanying my excitement, was the concern of my rusty football skills.

I haven’t been on a football pitch as a player for about 2 years now. I think the last time I played was in my final year of University when I did wonders against @yahuzah’s class in our Ghabsa week football game. He’ll come here and deny it and try to suggest I’m a liar, but it is what it is.😂

Anyways, one thing is clear - I’m no longer the star player I used to be. In fact, even the last time when I played against Yahuzah’s class, I was panting like a tired Panda. I fear that that might be the case of the coming match.

But not to fret, I have a plan. I’ve been training with the students the past 2 days to at least polish my stamina before the match, as I understand the match it on Thursday. That gives me 3 days (starting yesterday Monday) to train for the match.

When I went yesterday, I was surprised how much stamina I had. Lol for the first 15 minutes. Then the squatting and sitting around started. My chest heated up real quick and I was practically gasping for air by 20 minutes. I was disappointed at how reality turned out. Because in my head, I was still this stellar player. I wasn’t really shocked though, because of course I knew it wasn’t possible to just walk back on the field with the stamina of an daily-training athlete when I haven’t been on the field or done much gymnastics for not just one year, but two!

I will however mention that the hot chest was for the most part (I believe) due to the dustiness of the field we were playing in. One unpleasant thing I absolutely do not like about this place is how dusty it is. The community’s main road is not tarred, and our school is at the outskirts of the community, right next to our very unpleasant road. So yeah, dust is our friend. That, in addition to our own dusty football field did not help the c(hest)ase.

On today’s episode of training, I think I’m starting to adapt and regain a bit of my stamina back. Or maybe it was just because as opposed to the small poles we played last time, we were playing a full field today, so there were more players, and so less pressure on me.

I’m still no where near ready for this match though, and I have only tomorrow left to train. Will I shine on Thursday or not? We’ll find out soon:)

I’m already tired enough just doing this bare minimum, I’ll break down if I add more load. Lemme manage this one like that😂

Great. Another word of encouragement. You have a better chance convincing me a camel can pass through a needle than to sign you as my coach now.😂

Just because you know I’ll call you out, you want to lie 😂. I can’t be here and you’ll lie to hive about my class. You didn’t play well and you barely lasted 10 minutes😂. After 5 minutes you were panting like you just ran a marathon your coach had to sub you off😂.

I pity the kids cos they’ve not got a good coach 😂. They’ll do much better with Basit and I😂

I’m not their coach oo. Their coach is there, I’m just tagging along to play.😂

I already said you’ll try to deny it, and you proved me right. Lmao predictable😂

You're their coach, don't deny it.😂

Because you said I'll deny doesn't mean I'll keep quiet. 😂 You want to trick us all

Oh wow, mine is much longer in terms of not playing in the field. No time for football this past years.

2 years seems quite a lot but I think within these few days you can build up the stamina that will allow you to play at least above average during the game day.

Yeah I can understand, man. It’s like as we grow older, we’re less able to afford some of our younger hobbies growing up.

Today is actually my last day training. The match is tomorrow. Not sure I can make it happen, but we’ll see.🙂

Either way, I hope you shine on the field and make a good memorable experience out of it. Good luck man :)

You have shown great playing skills. I think there is win-lose in the game. So we will always watch and participate in the game attentively. Participating in any game is a big achievement for us. Your school play has been well managed with great skill indeed. May the Creator always bless you with all abilities.
