Cutting and unhooking fishing line while diving 🎣🏊‍♀ (Video inside)

On this occasion I was snorkeling in Cala d'Enmig (Campello, Alicante, Spain) when I came across a hooked fishing line thrown from the coast and abandoned by a fisherman, a fact that happens quite frequently.

  • Locating and holding the fishing line so as not to lose it because of the sea current.

Although it's not something of great importance or transcendence, the conscience of a good diver remains much calmer contributing to leave our reviled seas a little cleaner since, as you know, both the fishing line (very resistant nylon) as the sinker (lead) and the hook, are sources of contamination, to a greater or lesser extent.

  • Unsheathing the diving knife from the leg.

  • Small Cressi carbon 304 stainless steel diving knife (total length of 15.7 cm. - €36 recommended price, including fixing/extraction plate and straps).

  • Proceeding to cut the fishing line with the part of the knife dedicated to that purpose.

In my case, whenever I enter the water I carry that small diving knife with me that will facilitate this task and any other maneuver or unforeseen event that may occur underwater.

  • Winding the fishing line in my hand to reach the rock where it is anchored.

  • Reached the rock.

  • Here we have the culprits of the mess.

Once the hook and the sinker are unhooked, it is important to collect them in such a way that you do not stick the hook in your hand, since they are usually very rusty and could cause an infection.

  • Video of the process.

After this process, which took me about five minutes, the only thing left for you to do is take it out of the water and put the whole thing in a garbage container.

Video recorded with a GoPro Hero 4 Adventure.
