Whitney b2b Fishcheeks -- Actifit Report Card: January 24, 2025

Friday capped off the school week in style. After a short day of test grading for the 2nd Interim Assessment of the year, I had about an hour to relax before getting ready to go out for the evening. It's been so helpful to get to know my new math students in a short period of time by seeing their data results and reviewing their work on the scratch paper. This assessment was just what the doctor ordered to provide me the data I needed to better prepare for the 2nd half of the school year.

Date night consisted of a trip over to the Whitney Museum for free Friday viewing of its permanent collection and the new Alvin Ailey exhibit: "Edges of Alvin." The modern art on offer was breathtaking, and the Ailey installation was amazing. We made sure to wait around until 8pm for the guided tour of the new exhibit.

The entire 5th floor was turned into a sweeping celebration of Ailey's life and the changing themes of blackness that defined his dance inspiration. Migration, liberation, and exploration were just a few of the themes on display.

Something about the large colorful features of this city painting caught my eye. The big, pointy red gloves, the cool yellow of the blazer. The colors grabbed me and the playful, childlike features felt authentic and raw.

After three hours at the museum, we subways over from Chelsea to NoHo for a 10pm reservation at a city favorite Thai destination restaurant -- Fishcheeks. The meal was delicious. Spicy, flavorful, and packed with quality ingredients.

We started with mostly raw sliced shrimp slightly cooked in the acidic lime and pepper sauce it was served in. The shaved garlic and mint leaves were a nice complement to the delicate shrimp. Next we had crispy rice with roast pork as a second starter, which had more bold, spicy flavors.

We finished with a pair of thick coconut curry-based entrees. We shared a spicy crab curry and fresh scallops in chu-chee sauce. We completely demolished the scallop plate and left a bit of the crab dish to take home for a small dinner on Saturday. This has to be right up there among the top Thai restaurants in the city, no questions asked!

After that successful meal and late-night reservstion, we were stuffed and had no room even for dessert. My step count was another great success. The subway trip over to Manahttan, combined with all the walking through the museum, propelled my step count close to 20K.

Considering the high calorie count of the heavy coconut cream entrees I just devoured, I needed all the activity I could get. It also looks to be another quiet weekend without much planned to leave the house, so steps will be few and far between this weekend. Hopefully, I'll get another shot at 20K sooner than later. Until next time...
