Hell's Kitchen (the musical) -- Actifit Report Card: September 9, 2025

Tuesday started like another typical day at work. Up before 7am, out the door by 7.20, and scholars start flooding into my homeroom at 7.45am. I had a little extra pep in my step though, because I knew after work I was taking my partner on a surprise to see a Broadway musical.

The play was Hell's Kitchen, written by Alicia Keys. She used her songs to weave the backstory of when she was 17, falling in love with an older man and learning to play the piano from a talented teacher living in her NYC apartment building, the famous Manhattan Plaza, a building whose apartments are only available to rent by people in the arts (with years ling waiting lists).

The show was fantastic, one of the best I've seen over the past 5 years. It ended with one of my favorite tunes, "Empire State of Mind." The show felt true to New York City and dealt with the struggle of a mom and her daughter with an estranged father. I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting New York City who enjoys Alicia Keys' music. It was very well done. Until next time...
