What makes London a Financial Centre?

Hey everyone, at the beginning I would like to welcome you all to my new post and hope you have a great start to the new weekend! In my new post I would like to share something about my journey and I am happy if you can learn new things.

On my travels I always want to learn a lot about the culture of the country, but I am also very interested in getting to know the systems and during my time in London, I could not miss it to learn why London is one of the most important financial centres in the world. I was able to learn a lot in this regard and there was even a museum of the Bank of London that revolves around this topic and I will go into more detail about this visit in the future. Everywhere in the city there are traces why London is such an important location when it comes to global financial markets and this topic is deeply rooted in the history of the country and already in the past the British Empire played a central role when it comes to trade or finance. In order to better understand the whole thing, the beginning must first be considered and here various aspects such as the power of the colonies play an essential role and already in the Middle Ages London was already considered an important trading centre and already at this time its own finance system was created.

The British Empire became more and more powerful over the years with the exploration of new colonies as well as new routes which were essential for trade and of course more and more jobs were created and even companies were built like the well-known East India Company which at that time covered a large part of the trade. An important aspect of London's financial development were the goldsmiths without which many things would never have worked and could be seen as a kind of precursor in this system and this began at a time when people lost confidence in state institutions because there were many problem which is why people decided to store their values privately and here the goldsmiths came into play. The goldsmiths were considered a particularly safe place at the time and managed large amounts of gold even without the ownership of others, which is why they already had the necessary precautions for security and what people did is to store their values here privately and in return they received a kind of receipt which can be considered as a precursor of banknotes.

It did not take long until a separate system developed from it and these receipts became transferrable, which resulted in the creation of a large market and this system led to everything being institutionalised and it can be said that the early banking transactions of the city were carried out by the forges. A big change came with the well-known founding of the Bank of London during the 17th century which ensured that more and more aspects of finance have been centralised and new business branches have been opened, but it can be roughly said that the basis for this system was created by the goldsmiths. Traders also created the Royal Exchange, which was considered one of the oldest stock exchanges in the world, which played an essential role at global levels and thus money flowed through the British Empire throughout the world, with a large part of it flowing directly over London as a central location and at the same time, it became an important point in the international trade of materials.

To summarise the topic again briefly lies a huge part of the power of London as a financial location in the power of the colonies as well as the trade in raw materials as well as the goldsmiths who ensured that its own financial system was established which quickly gained international importance and also one of the first stock exchanges was created here which resulted in the large sum of international capital flowing to London. To this day, London is one of the most important financial centres in the world and continues to play a very important and central role when it comes to the global financial markets and especially when it comes to the stock market and fintech, it is an important location.

The British Empire really paved the way for London to be a financial powerhouse. Sadly, like most western countries they deindustrialized and sent so many jobs overseas. We did the same thing here in the US. London truly is a very cool place, and will continue to be a huge financial center for centuries to come. Barring World War 3 of course!

Awesome post as always!

That’s right, London is definitely not to be neglected and plays a central role on a global level. I’m glad you’re also thinking about problems like these. Thank you so much for the kind words and always happy to hear from you :)

Considering it was one of the biggest empires in the world that's no surprise here! The museum of a bank, never seen that

Wow, I'm very impressed with how much of London’s financial strength goes back to the empire and trade routes. The goldsmiths is almost like the foundation for modern banking.
