I Am Not Abandoned!…….My Actifit Report Card: August 4 2025

We came across on our other side of Lynden City Park hike today, this sign. We looked around but could see no dog. Hmmmm…..more in a minute.

The day began with some cycling and house chores. Early to mid afternoon, we decided to head to Lynden to run a couple quick errands, have some coffee and see what was happening at the fairgrounds. The Northwest Washington Fair starts this coming Thursday and runs through the 16th. There’s activity going on the in preparation. Be sure to check out @silvertop’s post for details and pictures.

We decided to hike ‘the other side’ of the park today. There’s not much in the way of shade to be had, and being as it was unseasonably cool today, it was perfect for this hike. Before crossing over, I watched as two squirrels climbed this tree and went into the hole you see. I wasn’t able to snap a picture quick enough as they moved pretty fast! Nothing is going to get their babies for sure!

I’ve noticed that many of the trees, specifically towards the bases, have ‘doorways’ or hollowed out areas perfect for small animal havens.

Once across the road to the other side of the park, there were lots of little details to notice. There were lots of little patches of these miniature daisies all along the trail.

Across the creek, some purple hydrangeas.

I’ve heard that if you want them to be purple like this, you put a rusty nail at the base of the plant. The soil acidity is what is supposed to create the shade of the flower color.

The suspension bridge that feels like it just barely supports its own weight as it seriously shakes as you walk across. The good news is you won’t drown should it give way. The bad-it’s just high enough that it will definitely hurt if it gives way and you fall! 😏

A little further is an elevated boardwalk of sorts with lots of trees on either side. It’s a lovely spot just to stop and soak in the surroundings. This pic of it is from June’s first visit to that side.

A little beyond that and the trail dumps into a neighborhood. The first house at the end had a really old truck parked in the driveway. I wasn’t sure but I was thinking it was a Ford, but didn’t realize the license plate told the story until I blew the photo up looking for markings to confirm. It so happens it is a 1956 Ford pickup. Very nice!

So, in getting back to the first picture in the post. A noise that sounded like a siren for a split second happened as we were walking past the field where the elusive Phoebe was supposed to be. I heard a couple barks and then howling and she came out from the base of the tree. A fellow hiker who was passing by told us she belongs to a worker at the lumberyard and Phoebe comes to work. Since she can’t be at the store, she has a safe place to spend the workday while her owner works. I guess some folks have been concerned she was abandoned. Here’s Phoebe.

It’s been a nice day. Our coolness will be short lived apparently. We were planning on attending the fair on Monday. The high for the day is being forecast as 89 degrees. Not especially good for walking around the fairgrounds. We may have to rethink our day of attendance.
