I hope you have a restful Saturday and make the most of it; today I share with you some pictures of a firefly that I found walking through the flowers in my garden which seemed very strange to me but then I realized that I had simply assumed that these are nocturnal insects and therefore I would not come across any during the course of the day.
I was surprised to learn that these insects capable of generating flashes of light belong to a large group; besides I thought that this one in the photo was the only one capable of doing so; reading a little I could find out that there are even worms that possess these luminous characteristics which is called bioluminescence.
As you can see she is a bit discouraged or possibly she is used to sleep in the morning after a long night and here I am bothering her with my photo session; something else I could find out and I clarify I do not know if it applies to this species; there is the possibility that all the lights that I see at night beautifying the darkness of my garden are pure males. Why do I say this? Apparently in fireflies there is a very accentuated difference between the female and the male (something they call sexual dimorphism) that is to say the males reach a complete development so they have wings like other coleoptera; on the other hand the females tend to conserve their initial aspect of larva, of course with some changes but without wings. Now you understand why I think that my garden is illuminated only by male fireflies at night.
Observing well this firefly I could remember to have seen in some occasion a similar insect but without wings; when I was removing some earth to sow a plant; I saw something moving among the dry earth and when I urged to see what it was, I could see, what I described as a very developed mealy bug; now I can realize that it was a female firefly; if my memory does not fail me I can say that it was a little bigger than this one of the photo.

Espero tengan un día sábado de descanso y lo aprovechen al máximo; hoy les comparto algunas fotografías de una luciérnaga que encontré paseando por las flores de mi jardín lo cual me pareció muy raro pero después caí en cuenta que simplemente yo había asumido que estos son insectos nocturnos y que por lo tanto no me toparía con ninguno en el transcurso del día.
Me sorprendió saber que estos insectos capaces de generar destellos de luz pertenecen a un amplio grupo; además yo pensaba, que esta de la foto la única capaz de hacerlo; leyendo un poco pude averiguar que hay hasta gusanos que poseen estas características luminosas a la que se le llama bioluminiscencia.
Como pueden observar esta algo desanimada o posiblemente esta acostumbrada a dormir por la mañanas después de una larga noche y yo aquí molestándola con mi sesión de fotos; Algo más que pude averiguar y aclaro no sé si aplica a esta especie; existe la posibilidad de que todas las luces que veo en las noches embelleciendo la oscuridad de mi jardín se traten de puros machos. ¿Por qué digo esto? Al parecer en las luciérnagas es muy acentuado una diferencia entre la hembra y el macho (algo que llaman dimorfismo sexual) es decir los machos alcanzan un desarrollo completo por lo que poseen alas como otros coleópteros; en cambio las hembra tienden a conservar su aspecto inicial de larva, por supuesto con algunos cambios pero sin alas. Ahora entienden porque pienso que mi jardín es iluminado solo por luciérnagas machos en las noches.
Observando bien a esta luciérnaga pude recordar haber visto en alguna ocasión un insecto parecido pero sin alas; cuando removía un poco de tierra para sembrar una planta; vi moverse algo entre la tierra seca y cuando urge para ver de qué se trataba, pude ver, lo que describí como una cochinilla muy desarrollada; ahora puedo darme cuenta que se trataba de una luciérnaga hembra; si mi memoria no me falla puedo decir que era un poco más grande que esta de la foto.
