It Only Takes one Quarter to Win A Basketball Game

The Eastern Conference Final between the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat is proving to be somewhat dramatic. They are currently tied at two wins apiece heading into the 5th match later today. It isn't usual to see playoff matches so keenly contested, but what makes this particular one stand out is the nature of how games have gone so far.

We have the Boston Celtics getting their two victories in absolutely dominant fashion, was he of them blowouts against the number one seeded Miami Heat. On the contrary, the Heat side has managed to secure victories despite losing the majority of quarters in those games. They have only had one dominant quarter in those games, losing or drawing the others and those have been enough to secure victories.

Such is the nature of the game of basketball and that is why it is quite risky to take any quarter for granted. Every point counts in the playoffs and doing things like committing reckless fouls and giving away free-throws, or taking shots with no hope of making them should be heavily discouraged. Those sloppy quarters have cost Boston heavily and it remains to be seen if they learn from their mistakes.

From what I have seen, I think the Boston Celtics are the better team and will likely emerge as winners of the series. Miami may have greater depth, but at full strength, the Celtics starting 5 outclasses any starting team the Miami Heat side presents. That said, the game of basketball doesn't quite work that way and is quite complicated. Players, form or simply a bad spell can heavily impact a quarter, and hence, the game itself.

This is likely why the playoffs are so intense and enjoyable. Most teams understand the implications of getting sloppy and as such try to give their best for the entire duration of the game. It will be interesting to see if the series follows the pattern of the first four games as it will certainly make for a unique and interesting competition. The Heat have a way of gaining momentum at Home so we can expect some fierce play between quarters.

Just Basketball Though?

The main point of highlighting the importance of a quarter in a basketball game is simply to showcase how a monetary lapse in concentration can prove costly in competition. This doesn't just apply to only basketball though, and there are several sports that can be decided on a moments notice.

Take a sport like boxing, UFC or any other combat sport where an athlete always has a punchers chance as long as the game is still on. A temporary lapse in concentration can get an athlete knocked out irrespective of how dominant they have been. It also applies to other sports that involve a time limit and scoring. Take football for instance that Manchester City pulled a remarkable turnaround to win the league with about 10 minutes remaining.

Conclusion

Competition is so exciting because of its nature. Things can change in a second and it takes full concentration and dedication throughout the contest in order to win. What matters at the end of the day is the final score.

To achieve your goals in any sport you must stay focused until the last second, until the last whistle blows or until the referee blows the final whistle. Having said that, GO CELTICS!!!!

lol I was hoping the Heat would win the series. Doesn't appear that way though, but never say never....

For the most part I feel like most NBA games are determined in the first and last 5 minutes of nearly every game. I had a friend that wouldn't even start watching the games until the 4th quarter because as he said - "that is when all the action happens."

I have seen a lot of drama happen in the final quarter in my short time of being of basketball fan. It is one sport where the term 'don't blink' literally holds true

This series is unreal. The way i see it is it only takes one player to be the difference to swing an entire series. I think that could be Jimmy Butler!
