There is a pattern that every French Defense player should know in the opening, not to win but to prevent disaster from descending on them. The tactic, however, could appear in other openings involving a small center like this one, that is, one side has a pawn on d4 and the other has a pawn on e6. But in the end it all boils down to a seemingly natural but careless move.
