A few days ago, I read a comment on Web 2 from someone who said they knew nothing about baseball, that their favorite sport was soccer, and that—given the impact the Venezuelan national baseball team and the tournament known as “The World Baseball Classic” were having in Europe—they needed to understand what the Caribbean country’s success in that competition meant using soccer analogies; The closest comparison to what happened with Venezuela in 2026 at the Classic, in terms of soccer at the World Cup, is the Spanish national team in 2010, which became world champion for the first time in its history.
The parallels are actually quite apt, since the Spanish national team, over the years and for a long time leading up to 2010, had developed a very strong style of play and produced excellent players; on the world stage, they had always generated high expectations, but then they would be eliminated early on. This contrasts with baseball in Venezuela, which is always the favorite in any tournament in this sport, but which, in the end, had never won anything at the national team level—until last Tuesday in Miami, when it defeated the powerful U.S. team 3-2, against all odds, in a high-level, world-renowned competition.

Throughout this tournament for Venezuela, there was a lot of talk about how advantageous it would be to finish first in their group, thereby avoiding Japan in the subsequent rounds. Of course, from the outside, as fans of the sport, we saw things as very straightforward in that regard, but for Venezuelan coach Omar López, that was something he didn’t care much about, as he argued that to become champions, they had to beat the best teams, and in a tournament of this nature, that was bound to happen sooner or later, and the matchup against a powerhouse would occur in the second round or in the grand final.
The Venezuelan manager, along with his large coaching staff, implemented a strategy—one that is actually more typical of soccer—rotating and pacing the players, and managing them in such a way that they would wear themselves out as little as possible. In baseball, constant activity is required to maintain "timing" when swinging at a ball, but apparently, the Venezuelan players already had that timing at the plate—and well-preserved at that—since this humble servant saw them very off-timing in the exhibition games leading up to the start of the tournament, but I believe it was all part of a magnificent plan.

As Venezuelans and fans of the game, we knew how important it was to beat Japan in the quarterfinals; getting past that hurdle cleared the way for us, not just on the field but also mentally. It was a huge upset that made waves everywhere, and we believe that right there, at that moment, the Venezuelan team truly won this classic, because we weren’t the favorites against the Asian team, and the players finally realized what they were capable of and just how strong and tenacious they were on the field.
The Italian and U.S. teams were already part of the story on this path to the title; in other words, they were a hurdle we had to overcome and technically dispatch to clinch the championship. That sounds ambitious, reflecting confidence and self-esteem, but that’s how it was. The Venezuelan team looked very strong after defeating Japan, which made them seem invincible—a giant that had been sleeping and owed a debt to baseball. It was proven that Venezuela is now a legitimate powerhouse in the sport of the glove, the bat, and the ball. What a triumph for a country that lives, breathes, and dreams of baseball every day of its life.
