Retomando un poco otra disciplina, en este caso el baloncesto, especialmente el de la NBA, pensamos que después del Phil Jackson, quizás el director técnico, más exitoso, no solamente por registros estadísticos, o cantidad de premios individuales, sino debido a su entrega, dedicación y amor a este juego, es sin duda Gregg Popovich. Son 28 años de carrera profesional como dirigente al frente de un equipo como lo es el de Los San Antonio Spurs, que los llevó del sótano, a brillar por casi 3 décadas.

En este 2025, y luego de casi toda una vida al frente de los de San Antonio, coloca punto y final a su estadía en la liga, después de haberlo dado todo, con un solo equipo, algo que es altamente llamativo, si vemos al resto de sus colegas, que han sido igual de exitosos que él, pero que solamente haya estado con una franquicia, significan muchas cosas, la lealtad, y el más profundo amor por este deporte, que se podría decir, que su largo viaje por la NBA, fue más por querer a este juego, que por dinero.

Resulta muy sencillo decir que un director técnico es bueno, cuando en su quinteto tiene a los mejores, es decir, a jugadores supertalentosos, o jugadores consagrados. Con Popovich pasaba algo en particular, y es, que él elegía a los jugadores, y su vez los potenciaba, esto quiere decir, que él veía en los jugadores algo especial, y le sacaba el máximo provecho, hasta el punto, de no solamente hacer que un jugador fuese bueno, sino que jugara más en colectivo, habilidad que lo llevó a conquistar 5 campeonatos, una cifra muy importante para su cargo.

Del éxito de este técnico, hay mucha evidencia, y una de ellas, fue la inclusión de un jugador como Tim Duncan, a un sistema de juego, que significaba jugar junto con otro de su misma posición, David Robinson, fuesen iguales o no dentro del tabloncillo, el tema de la altura era algo llamativo, se podían estar estorbando bajo la mirada de muchos, pero él los hizo jugar el uno para el otro, hasta tal punto, que se llegaron a llamar las torres gemelas, ganando su primer campeonato en 1999.

Popovich continuó con la famosa estadística que ha prevalecido durante años en la NBA, sin caer en cosas raciales. Los blancos son los mejores técnicos en esta liga, los más exitosos y los que mejores han empleado sus estilos de juego, hasta llevarlos a dinastía. Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, Flip Saunders, Rick Carlisle, Steve Kerr entre otros, han llevado a sus respectivos equipos en su momento, a conquistar por lo menos un campeonato. Cabe destacar que Kerr, fue jugador de Popovich en San Antonio, una muestra más de que el éxito del de cabello blanco, llegó más allá, de dirigir y formar jugadores.

Que equipo ese de San Antonio Spurs!!! Gregg Popovich sin dudas puso lo suyo, pero el terceto conformado por Duncan, Parker y Ginobili fueron el dream team que hizo olvidar un poco al de los Chicago Bulls de Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen y Tony Kukoc.

Saludos @epirela22, da un poco de tristeza y nostalgia ver como los grandes se hacen grandes y deben dejar pasar a los más jóvenes.

Realmente, Popovich atravesó problemas de salud que le hacían más difícil realizar su trabajo y tuvo que tomar la decisión de dejar la dirección, aunque seguirá ligado a las escuelas de San Antonio.

Si filosofía de juego, la disciplina táctica, la manera de potenciar jugadores y el respeto que infundía eran elementos distintivos de uno de los mejores entrenadores en la historia de la NBA.
