Roland Garros - June 1

This time I'm not going to say it was a shocking day as per total it wasn't except for one match.

Novak Djokovic had an easy job yesterday with the American Tennys Sandgren. It wasn't a challenge and we all knew from the start who has the chance to win here. Take it as a training as this match did not require extreme effort from Djokovic.

The South African giant, Kevin Anderson wasn't as lucky as Djokovic. He met the South Korean Kwon Soon-woo and lost in five sets. I'm afraid Anderson is heading towards the end of his career and we may hear his retiring news very soon. He had surgery last year and has been struggling with injuries, plus he's not a spring chicken anymore.

The Matteo Berrettini vs Taro Daniel match was an interesting one. Losing a set to 6-0 is painful and when it's the first set, it can have devastating effect mentally. I'm sure it must have been painful for Taro Daniel to be defeated in the first set, but regardless, he had the mental strength to continue playing and win some games in the upcoming 4 sets, even winning the third set. He's 28 years old, so I can't say he has the whole career ahead of himself, but maybe next time he'll be lucky to meet a lower ranking player as Berettini is one of the best.

Andreas Seppi vs Felix Auger Aliassime was another disappointing match. I'm following Felix Auger Aliassime's career, since he started to train with Toni Nadal. So far there's nothing to talk about, Aliassime has been defeated in the first round at every single Grand Slam tournament this year. Maybe he needs more time or he's not as talented as they say. Time will tell. He was 20th seed here and played against the Italian Seppi, who's world No. 98 right now, while Aliassime is world No. 21. He was literally struggling and he could not even hide his frustration. Not a good sigh, not to mention the result. As far as i know the contract between him and Toni Nadal is for one year. Let's see if it gets renewed. I'm really curious.

The shock of the day was provided by these two players, the German Jan-Lennard Struff and Andrey Rublev. At first I though Rublev needs some time to wake up, it's happened before, but then he always got himself together and won the next sets. Not this time though.

I don't know what happened honestly, even though I saw the whole match. Rublev put in 100%, or even more, but Struff was way better. He knew how to trick Rublev every single time and scored a point. From technical point of view it was an amazing match, even though I'm not happy to see Rublev eliminated. He is needed in this game later and now he's missing.

Alex de Minaur also had to fight for the victory, even though tree sets were enough to defeat the Italian Stefano Travaglia. The third set ended in tie-break and he was lucky he could end the match there.

Gaël Monfils is a solid player but I haven't seen him for a while. He has good moments and bad moments, that's the reason for missing the big competitions. Yesterday on the other hand he was able to win against Albert Ramos Viñolas, so we're going to see him another time at least.

Overall, things are not looking good for the elite. Every day a high ranking player is eliminated, that comes as a shock. Yesterday was Rublev's turn to go home. Let's see what's going to happen today.
