Gustavo Alfaro desarrolló un 4-4-2; un planteamiento que exige mucho físico sobre todo por las bandas, es de transición rápida, ya que los laterales y mediocampista por los costados de la cancha se encargaran de gestionar pases largos o centros eficientes a los dos puntas. A la hora de defender, el mediocampista derecho e izquierdo se retrasan para darle seguimiento a la presión lateral, por consiguiente en algunas ocasiones defendían hasta con 6 piezas o incluso hasta con 8 porque pude notar como Gruezo y Caicedo bajaron al borde del área cuando Chile tenía el control por encima de la mitad de la cancha. A eso le llamo seriedad en el orden táctico, por ese tipo circunstancias es la tercera selección que menos goles ha encajado en la actual campaña.
