Genuinely tho, this is how I started running. Buzzfeed actually has a pretty solid couch-to-5k program that’s super doable. There’s probably even programs out there specifically curated for heavier folks too. But having the “I signed up to run at this event so I need to start training” is a perfect motivator, and the perfect context in which to find a structure to get started.

“Just go outside and run” doesn’t work for everyone.
Also:
Get decent running shoes once you sign up for the 5K and train in them. Any sneaker store will help you.,
Experiment with music, find tunes that motivate you and earbuds/headphones that are comfy to run with.,
Drink water, and water with electrolytes once you start running for more that 10 min especially.

Decent shoes are worth your time.

Chi running is a technique that is worth your time. You don't need to pay for it, you can find plenty of info

Run slower and for longer. The vast majority of healthy people can do a 5k outta the gate but it depends on your pace

Run slower than you think. In the beginning it's about the number of miles you get in. Not how much you sprint

It's okay to walk if you need

Learn about cardio zones. Zone 2 is king
