Suntan is caused by exposure to the ray of the sun.
Not immediate exposure actually, but an exposure for a couple of hours. The skin changes colour to a brownish pigmentation. The colour becomes obvious and weird because it is different from the rest of the skin.

This is why folks make use of some ointment when they want to expose their skin to the sun, they make use of this ointment to avoid skin burn.
