Con cuatro juegos restantes por jugar, las definiciones llegan a la liga venezolana de béisbol profesional (LVBP), en una jornada donde conocimos el segundo clasificado al round robin: Cardenales de Lara. Los pájaros rojos lo hicieron categóricamente al dar una paliza al primer equipo eliminado de la zafra: Leones del Caracas. Con un despliegue ofensivo de 22 imparables, los guaros entregaron un mensaje contundente al Caracas: "Si deseas estar en la fiesta de Enero, debes poseer buen pitcheo", cuestión completamente ausente del roster capitalino. EL cuarto bate y leftfielder Yohendrick Piñango lideró la felpa al impulsar 4 carreras, producto de 3 imparables en 6 turnos al bate (incluyendo dos dobletes productores). El marcador final lo dice todo: 12 carreras a 3, en un partido donde el abridor larense Adrian Almeida dispersó 7 imparables en 5 episodios, aceptando una carrera, regalando un boleto y ponchando a 3. Con la caída de Bravos, los chicos de Barquisimeto se colocaron a juego y medio detrás del líder y la derrota significó el ingreso de la ambulancia para retirar el cadáver del león.

     With four games left on the slate, the Venezuelan Winter League (LVBP) is tightening up, and this night we got the second ticket punched to the round robin: Cardenales de Lara. The Redbirds did it loud and clear, pounding the first squad officially out of the race: Leones del Caracas. With a 22-hit barrage, the guaros sent a blunt message to Caracas: “If you wanna be at the January party, you better bring pitching,” something totally missing from the capital roster. Cleanup hitter and leftfielder Yohendrick Piñango led the beatdown, driving in 4 runs off 3 knocks in 6 trips to the dish (including two ribbie doubles). The scoreboard tells the whole story: 12–3, in a game where starter Adrian Almeida scattered 7 hits across 5 frames, allowed just one run, handed out a free pass, and fanned 3. With Bravos dropping theirs, the Barquisimeto crew pulled within a game and a half of the leader, and the defeat meant that the ambulance had to come and remove the lion's body.

     Entretanto, las Águilas del Zulia retomaron el camino ganador en el Luis Aparicio "El Grande" de Maracaibo, al domar 7 carreras por 6 a los Tigres de Aragua. En un dramático partido donde entraron al cierre del noveno perdiendo por dos carreras, las rapaces fueron capaces de remontar el marcador para dejar en el terreno a los felinos. Lo peor de todo fue el cerrador oficial de los Tigres Ronnie Williams, quien entregó el juego luego de haber relevado exitosamente sus últimas 25 presentaciones y finalmente tener una mala noche. El hombre aceptó dos cohetes, otorgó cuatro pasaportes y lanzó un wild pitch para sellar su derrota. Andrés Chaparro fue quien lideró la ofensiva zuliana al batear de 4-2, sacar un boleto e impulsar dos carreras. Con el laurel, los chicos de la tierra de la gaita se afianzan en la 3ra. posición de la tabla a dos juegos de los Bravos, mientras que los felinos quedan muy comprometidos en el séptimo lugar y una sola derrota más los sacaría del round robin final.

      Meanwhile, Águilas del Zulia got back on the winning track at Luis Aparicio “El Grande” in Maracaibo, taming Tigres de Aragua 7–6. In a nail-biter where they came to the bottom of the ninth trailing by two, the birds of prey clawed back to walk off the cats. The nightmare came for Tigres’ closer Ronnie Williams, who coughed it up after stringing together 25 straight successful outings and finally hitting a bad night. The man gave up two rockets, handed out four free passes, and uncorked a wild pitch to seal the loss. Andrés Chaparro carried the Zulia bats, going 2-for-4 with a walk and driving in two runs. With the W, the boys from the land of the gaita lock down third place in the standings, two games behind Bravos, while the felines are stuck in seventh and just one more L would bounce them out of the round robin.

     En Valencia, los Navegantes de Magallanes parecen respirar postemporada (luego de haber tenido una ronda clasificatoria para el olvido con cambio de manager incluído) y le devolvieron a los Tiburones de La Guaira, los sinsabores recibidos a lo largo del campeonato al vencerles 6 rayitas a 3. La ofensiva turca estuvo representada en los bates de Tucupita Marcano y Luis Suisbel, quienes trajeron par de carreras al plato cada uno. El pitcheo valenciano combinó 10 ponches para mojar la pólvora de los bates cartilaginosos, quienes se mostraron ansiosos en el home plate. La ofensiva guaireña solo pudo batear 5 imparables (4 de ellos provenientes de los barquillos grandeligas), con lo cual parecen confirmar la tesis de la dependencia de tales peloteros para obtener resultados. Con la victoria, la nave turca pone velas hacia la postemporada ocupando la quinta posición medio juego por encima de los propios Tiburones. Así las cosas, veremos los 4 partidos que restan jugarse a muerte (3 para La Guaira).

     In Valencia, Navegantes de Magallanes are starting to breathe postseason air (after a forgettable regular stretch that even saw a skipper change) and handed Tiburones de La Guaira a taste of their own medicine, beating them 6–3. The Turkish bats came alive through Tucupita Marcano and Luis Suisbel, each driving in a pair. The Valencia arms piled up 10 punchouts to douse the powder of the shark bats, who looked jumpy at the dish. La Guaira’s offense managed just 5 knocks (4 of them from their big-league cones), confirming the theory that they lean heavy on those imports to get results. With the win, the Turkish ship sets sail toward January ball, sliding into fifth place a half-game ahead of Tiburones. That leaves 4 games to be played like do-or-die (3 for La Guaira).

     Finalmente, los Caribes de Anzoátegui parecen cumplir la meta de clasificar al round robin por vez primera desde hace 4 temporadas, al doblegar a los líderes Bravos de Margarita 9 carreras por 6. Eso sí, tuvieron que usar 8 lanzadores para frenar la poderosa ofensiva isleña. El abridor caribe Oswald Mori no pudo superar los 4 episodios lanzados, pero limitó el daño contrario a solo 2 carreras. Como ha sido usual en la temporada, los chicos de Puerto La Cruz emboscaron al pitcheo de Margarita en el quinto inning con 5 carreras, tomando un control del juego que jamás perdieron. Guatamare vió como Andruw Monasterio y Hernán Pérez desplegaban sus bates para empujar 3 carreras cada uno y convertirse en las bujías del equipo. Caribes queda firme en el cuarto lugar a 2 y medio de la azotea, mientras que los Bravos siguen en la vanguardia de la tabla.      Closing, Caribes de Anzoátegui look set to hit their goal of making the round robin for the first time in four seasons, knocking off the league leaders Bravos de Margarita 9–6. They had to burn through eight arms to cool down the island bats. Starter Oswald Mori couldn’t get past four innings but held the damage to just two runs. As has been their trademark this season, the Puerto La Cruz crew ambushed Margarita’s pitching in the fifth with a five-run rally, grabbing control they never let go. In Guatamare, Andruw Monasterio and Hernán Pérez swung the lumber to drive in three runs apiece, sparking the squad. Caribes stand solid in fourth place, two and a half back of the penthouse, while Bravos keep holding the top of the board.
