La pesadilla del Bronx... // The Bronx nightmare... || OPINION

The Bronx is a neighborhood located north of Upper Manhattan, south of that neighborhood is Yankee Stadium. But we are not going to talk about the home of the team nicknamed the Manhattan Mules, mainly because I never understood this last nickname and because the protagonist of last night was not that stadium, but where the boys from the Bronx were visiting: the Angel Stadium on the other side of the country. Going on a trip so far away to keep giving the office something to think about, must not be nice.

Last night the Yankees finished the second straight series where they avoided being swept by two of the worst teams on the West Coast: the Athletics and the Angelinos. Six games lost and three won have the Yankees narrowing their lead against Tampa Bay, with whom they begin a weekend series starting tomorrow, Friday. And the Rays will not be such an easy team to beat because they are in second place, especially as they will move even closer to the lead by sweeping the three-game series in Tampa. What a problem the Yankees have.

The Rays swept the series against Miami and are ready to host their archrival. A modern rivalry of sorts given the competitive teams Florida has put together in recent years. The Cartilaginians have become a feared team in the division for some time now. The Mules will not have it easy. Meanwhile, they took a painful loss yesterday from Mister Japan Shohei Ohtani. Someone who thrives against the Yankees and flirts with them every time they see him.

Can you imagine the Yankees with Ohtani on their roster? Better yet, turn out the lights. But the latter is what almost happened in Anaheim last night, as the Japanese native's three-run home run finished perfecting after the bases were loaded. Once he stepped on the rubber, the stadium lights went out. We don't know if the park staff did it to highlight some sort of fire-spitting cannons in the outfield or because of a power failure (something you see a lot around these parts).

The issue was that starter Gerrit Cole (who pitched a very good game) tried to scare Ohtani with a pitch hit at the elbow. With men on first and second, the boy from the land of the rising sun accepted the challenge, and on the next pitch to the knees and the outside corner, he hit a punch to make the pitcher ponder whether it was worth challenging him. It was a swing of pure skill and power. An ordinary left-hander could not look for the ball where it landed, but Ohtani is not an ordinary player.

In a game that the Yankees' star pitcher had in the bag, the Japanese single-handedly brought it all back. He became, with his 30th home run of the season, the only man on the face of the earth to have knocked 30 out of the park and win 10 games in the same season. In how many stats have the guy beaten the Babe? And in three days, his two home runs put the Angelinos ahead twice in two games to never lose it again, Isn't that amazing?

Sad to see the Yankees, who were on the run, lose their hard-earned lead. Six games is also a decent lead, but, right now, we can't say for sure that the Bronx would end up playing more like the wild card if they continue to play so poorly. Meanwhile, from these pages, we unfailingly declare Shohei Ohtani as the Bronx nightmare.

Saludos.
