Un solo juego de una temporada extremadamente larga con un calendario de 162 partidos, jamás será la vara para medir a un equipo y, mucho menos, para dar como cierto los pronósticos previamente escritos. Mucho de ello tiene que ver con factores fuera del juego que usted no puede controlar: lesiones de jugadores, ambiente en el dugout, cambios a media temporada, etc. Dicho esto, el día inaugural de la temporada de 2024 en las Grandes Ligas nos dejó un asomo de lo que podría ser una constante a lo largo de la zafra.

¿Recuerdan cuando hablamos de los Cascabeles de Arizona? Bueno, le dieron un baile histórico a los Rockies de Colorado 16 carreras a una. Y la razón porque haya sido histórico el triunfo tiene que ver con haber enviado a la goma 18 hombres en el tercer episodio y anotar 14 carreras que los Rockies permitieron. Desde 1900 no se veía una paliza así en un día inaugural dentro de un solo episodio. Los líderes ofensivos fueron Lourdes Gurriel Jr. y el venezolano Gabriel Moreno, quienes impulsaron 5 y 3 carreras respectivamente. Todo el line-up bateó al menos un hit, menos Corbin Carroll que se embasó dos veces por cuatro bolas malas.

A single game in an extremely long season with a 162-game schedule will never be the yardstick by which to measure a team, much less to give previously written predictions as true. A lot of it has to do with factors outside of the game that you can't control: player injuries, dugout atmosphere, mid-season changes, etc. That said, the opening day of the 2024 Major League Baseball season gave us a glimpse of what could be a constant throughout the season.

Remember when we talked about the Arizona D-Backs? Well, they gave the Colorado Rockies a historic dance 16 runs to one. And the reason for the historic win has to do with sending 18 men to the rubber in the third inning and scoring 14 runs that the Rockies allowed. Not since 1900 had such a thrashing been seen on an opening day within a single episode. The offensive leaders were Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Venezuelan Gabriel Moreno, who drove in 5 and 3 runs respectively. The entire line-up batted at least one hit, except for Corbin Carroll who got two runs on four bad balls.

Ya sabíamos de la calidad del roster ofensivo de los Cascabeles, pero ¿Qué sucederá con un equipo cuando a su mejor lanzador le anotan 10 carreras en trabajo de dos innings y un tercio? Los Rockies no la tienen nada fácil. Los equipos tienden a entregar la pelota al mejor lanzador de su rotación, el primer día de temporada y quisiera pensar esto fue solo un traspiés. Pero no. Los Rockies nada tienen que buscar y solo serán fuertes en su propio parque. Lo lamento por ellos cuando estén en la carretera, Phoenix no será benevolente con ellos.

Y ¿Cómo le fue a los Mellizos de Minnesota? En nuestra previa fuimos claros que las posibilidades de este equipo pasaban por la salud de su roster y por lo que pueda aportar el cuerpo de pitcheo. Así las cosas, el venezolano Pablo López demostró el porqué es uno de los pitchers de élite actualmente y justificó el puesto número cuatro en los power rankings de los lanzadores abridores (sí, también existen los rankings individuales). Lanzó durante siete innings, permitió 4 hits y una sola carrera (jonrón del venezolano Maikel García, primer bateador del partido), ponchó a siete y se llevó el triunfo ante los Reales de Kansas City 4-1.

We already knew about the quality of the Rattlers' offensive roster, but what happens to a team when its best pitcher gets scored 10 runs in two and a third innings of work? El puertorriqueño Carlos Correa fue el líder de la ofensiva al batear de 4-3 con dos carreras impulsadas y una base por bolas recibida. Los Reales van a necesitar que Salvador Pérez carbure si no se quieren quedar atrás tan pronto. Y los Mellizos requerirán que Correa se mantenga en salud, porque es la bujía del equipo. Por otro lado, el jardinero de los Medias Rojas de Boston Tyler O'Neill, se convirtió en el primer pelotero en batear un jonrón el día inaugural por quinta vez consecutiva, algo que jamás se había hecho antes en la historia. Estaba empatado con Yogi Berra, Gary Carter y Todd Hundley con cuatro. Así que ya saben, si son dueños de equipo de ligas mayores y desean un jonrón el primer día de la temporada, tienen que poseer su contrato.

La nota extra pelota fue la protagonizada por Nelson Cruz, retirado pelotero y futuro salón de la fama quien brilló 8 años con los Rangers de Texas y cuatro más con los Marineros de Seattle, además de otros equipos durantes 19 temporadas. Lanzó la primera bola en el partido entre los Medias Rojas de Boston y los Marineros de Seattle y paso seguido, firmó un contrato de un día con los nautas para poder retirarse con ese uniforme. Siempre se sintió como un Marinero y con ese uniforme quiere ser exaltado. Comprendo su preferencia porque Seattle es una ciudad que enamora. Y lo que es del cura...va para la iglesia.
