Ignoro la estadística exacta, pero los bucaneros debieran estar entre los líderes de carreras anotadas por la cantidad de palizas que han repartido a los largo de la zafra. Son imponentes de verdad cuando se hallan en el plato, sobre todo el dominicano Oneil Cruz, quien es toda una pesadilla. Por eso fue interesante enterarme de la apertura que tendría el lanzador venezolano Eduardo Rodríguez, domador del team USA en el recién culminado WBC. Es verdad, los Piratas están a 5 juegos detrás de Chicago, pero dejaron de ser aquel equipo que rellenaba la división para convertirse en un equipo de cuidado. Si están en el sótano de la división Central de la liga Nacional, no ha sido por jugar mal (de hecho su balance de ganados y perdidos está estacionado en .528) y ahora en el PNC Park, están de plácemes por tener una plantilla que los pone a soñar. Lo que ignoraban, es la noche de pesadilla que se les venía encima, algo que ha marcado su andar en la temporada: o ganan por paliza o pierden con estilo.

I don’t have the exact stats in front of me, but the Bucs have to be among the league leaders in runs scored, given how many blowouts they’ve handed out all year. They are straight-up intimidating when they’re at the dish, especially Oneil Cruz, who is a total nightmare for any pitcher. That’s why I was locked in for the start by Venezuelan right-hander (or lefty) Eduardo Rodriguez, who shut down Team USA in the recent WBC. It’s true, the Pirates are five games back of Chicago, but they’ve stopped being a division cellar-dweller and turned into a legit threat.      Evocar a los Tigres de Detroit del 2008, fue lo que lograron los venezolanos Willson Contreras y Wilyer Abreu en la tarde de ayer en el Comerica Park. Si, en ese coso y en más de una oportunidad, Maglio Ordóñez y Miguel Cabrera batearon jonrones consecutivos para la causa felina. Pero ayer, fueron los visitantes Medias Rojas de Boston, quienes horadaron el suelo sagrado del Comerica.      Ningún conjunto debiera depender de un jugador para traer las carreras. Suponemos se estudia el balance en el line-up para que todos los peloteros produzcan. Y si hay alguno que ande apagado, el resto sufrirá. Dentro de los Reales de Kansas City, muchos otros peloteros diferentes de Salvador Pérez pueden hacer el trabajo. Pero es difícil no fijarse en que el resurgimiento del equipo, con 5 victorias seguidas, no está emparejado con la reacción al bate de Salvy. Ayer volvió a empujar carreras con un sencillo productor de 2. Y aunque se ponchó un par de veces, el triunfo no le fue esquivo a los nobles, quienes se llevaron el juego con marcador de 5 carreras a 3 sobre los Guardianes de Cleveland. La división está tan apretada que los Mellizos (últimos) están a juego y medio detrás de los Guardianes y los Reales salieron por vez primera ésta temporada del sótano de la división adelantando a las ciudades gemelas en la tabla.      No team should have to rely on just one guy to drive in runs. You’d assume the lineup construction is balanced so every player produces, because if one bat goes ice-cold, the whole squad feels the burn. In the Royals' clubhouse, there are plenty of guys not named Salvador Perez who can get the job done, but it’s hard to ignore that their recent surge—winning five straight—is perfectly synced with Salvy heating up at the plate. Yesterday, he knocked in two more with a clutch two-run single. Even though he went down swinging a couple of times, the Royals stayed on top, taking down the Cleveland Guardians 5-3. The division is so tight right now that the last-place Twins are only a game and a half back of the Guardians. With this win, Kansas City finally climbed out of the cellar, leapfrogging the Twin Cities in the standings. It’s going to be a wild finish in this division, and we’ll be tracking it every step of the way.
