Existen jugadores que pasan por debajo de los reflectores, es algo inentendible pero la realidad es más complicada. En efecto, los grandes contratos tendrán mayores probabilidades de atraer la atención, pero hay jugadores que son una ganga y hacen el trabajo sin esperar reconocimiento. Están allí porque aman el béisbol, lo saben jugar, los graduaron desde las ligas menores, pero permanecen en el anonimato o subestimados. Hoy no hablaremos de ellos, pero sí de algunos que no he tenido en el radar.

Antes de entrar en el tema, los Reales de Kansas City lideran sorpresivamente la división central de la liga Americana, ayer ganaron por paliza de 11 a 7 a los Mets de Nueva York, tomados de la mano del receptor venezolano Salvador Pérez, quien remolcó cuatro carreras y se fue de 5-2. Uno de los hits fue su cuadrangular 250 en las Grandes Ligas, un batazo que pegó en el guante del jardinero central de los Mets y el rebote lo desvió contra la cerca, justo por encima de la raya que marca el jonrón. Fue declarado doble inicialmente, pero la revisión de imágenes pedida por él, le dio la razón: cuadrangular.

There are players who go under the spotlight, it's somewhat misunderstood but the reality is more complicated. Indeed, the big contracts will be more likely to attract attention, but there are players who are a bargain and do the job without expecting recognition. They are there because they love baseball, they know how to play it, they graduated from the minor leagues, but they remain anonymous or underappreciated. Thairo Estrada es uno de esos jugadores que hemos tenido fuera del radar. Segunda base titular de los Gigantes de San Francisco, ha venido mejorando con el bate luego de un arranque espantoso. Ayer fue la bujía del triunfo ante los Rays de Tampa Bay, al producir de 4-3 con tres carreras anotadas e igual cantidad de producidas. Dos de esos hits fueron cuadrangulares, el primero en el 4to. episodio en cuenta de 1-2, y el juego empatado, empalmó una recta de 96 MPH que terminó en las gradas del jardín izquierdo. Ya, con los Gigantes ganando 8-1 y hombre en primera, el relevista florideño lo quiso pasar con recta alta de 94 MPH y también la devolvió encima de la cerca por el mismo lado.

Los Gigantes arrancaron lento y necesitan el bate de Estrada en un line-up con suficiente potencial que no ha estado bateando. Otro jugador que no hemos tenido en el radar ha sido el right fielder venezolano Wilyer Abreu, natural de Maracaibo y que hizo el equipo grande en la primavera. Había estado bateando discretamente, pero en los últimos juegos se ha encendido. Ayer se fue de 4-2 con dos anotadas y una remolcada en el triunfo de los Medias Rojas de Boston ante los Angelinos de Los Ángeles 7-2. Y en buen momento ha arrancado porque su lugar estaba siendo cuestionado, los outfielders deben batear mucho, si no lo hacen pueden perder el puesto ya que son posiciones en el campo prescindibles.

Thairo Estrada is one of those players we've had under the radar. A starting second baseman for the San Francisco Giants, he has been improving with the bat after a dreadful start. Otro que pasa debajo de los reflectores es el outfielder criollo Oswaldo Cabrera de los Yankees de Nueva York. Digamos que es justo porque tienen a Judge y Soto en la nómina. Pero el tipo ha respondido y ayer en el primer juego de una cartelera doble contra los Guardianes de Cleveland, Oswaldo significó la ventaja que nunca perderían los Mulos, al batear un jonrón y remolcar dos carreras, con una anotada en tres turnos. Él, junto a Soto, está siendo una de las razones por las cuales los Yankees están en la azotea de su división.

En el mismo juego, el abridor por los Guardianes fue el venezolano Carlos "Cookie" Carrasco, quien hizo su tercera apertura. Permitió una carrera en cuatro innings y dos tercios, ponchó a dos y otorgó 5 pasaportes. Demás está decir que tendrá por apretar el brazo, porque tantas bases por bolas son mortales en éste nivel. Si no le hicieron más carreras fue porque la defensiva guardiana le respaldó. Perdió el partido y acumula un WHIP de 1.66 para el olvido. Nos leemos por allí.

Another one who goes under the spotlight is New York Yankees' Creole outfielder Oswaldo Cabrera. Let's say it's fair because they have Judge and Soto on the roster.
