Reencuentro con café // Reunion with coffee || STORY

The cafeteria "Eternal rest" was buzzing with the smells of pastries and afternoon coffee. Just before sunset, two illustrious legends of the game of baseball had met in front of the television sets in the cafeteria. It was an unlikely meeting, but in heaven, anything can happen and this meeting had something that connected the protagonists. When they arrived within seconds of each other, they shook hands and sat down at a table in front of the biggest TV in the place. They wanted to watch the game between the Detroit Tigers and the San Francisco Giants.

Rod Carew ordered a large espresso and donuts (who drinks large black coffee? Only Latinos!), while Rickey Henderson wanted a large macchiato with chocolate cake. The waitress left and a guy came up to ask for autographs from both of them. The boy asked, "What are you both doing here?" And Carew replied, "We came to see Miguel Cabrera beat Rickey's record for hits batted in." The boy scratched his head in disbelief. But it was true. Both legends were brought together by a boy born in Maracay, Aragua State, Venezuela.

"Something that makes me proud of Miggy" mumbled Henderson "Is that he wears the same number used by me when he played with the Oakland Athletics" while he took a sip of coffee, which had arrived at the table, in the interim of the conversation with the boy. "Well, man, that doesn't mean anything" complained Carew "Miguel uses the whole field like I did" trying to minimize the effect of Rickey's phrase "It's not for you to get like that either" finished the ex-Athletic. Of course, now retired, they wanted to look for points of similarity between their careers and Miggy's to annoy the other.

Miguel Cabrera was approaching the rubber with his bat gripped in the thick part to take his turn in the first inning and the announcer of the broadcast warned that, if he to bat a hit, Miguel would tie Rickey Henderson with 3055 hits. He had already surpassed Carew the day before and so both were in the cafeteria watching the game. Miguel stood on the rubber and fought the shift as he usually does "Miggy is a lot like me" said Rickey "He likes to make the pitchers work" And the transmission proved him right because the count was put at 2 balls and 2 strikes.

A cutter came off Rodón's arm and Cabrera swung at it, the ball rolled hard and hit the pitcher's mound, flying through the air on the rebound and giving Miguel enough time to get to first, before the shortstop could do nothing "He ran like me" shouted Henderson "What a fool you are" replied Carew "Don't you see that the bounce was very high? "and Henderson said "Well yes, but you can't deny that he put a world on it from home" Carew shook his head, thinking that Rickey wanted to take all the credit for the game.

The game progressed and the Giants were up by four runs in the sixth when it was Cabrera's turn again. Mike Yastrzemski was on third. Rodon changed the recipe for Miguel and on a 2-strike, 1-ball count threw him a curve. Miggy took a half-back swing to put the ball between the first baseman and the pad for the 3056th hit, driving in the go-ahead run. "Just like me," Carew said, "That run had to be brought in batting for first." And this time, Henderson agreed with Rod, as he applauded Miguel wildly for having surpassed his mark: "Nothing like seeing other immortals live and beating your numbers," Rickey mumbled.

"Undoubtedly it will be," Carew finished. And although this encounter was improbable, remember dear reader: we use fiction to recreate the present. Both legends are in excellent health, enjoying retirement, that is, Rod and Rickey are alive and kicking. Meanwhile, Miguel continues to pave his way to the hall of fame in Cooperstown, NY.
