Solo que no fue así y el muchacho logró amarrar a la poderosa toletería esquivadora, con juego de solo dos carreras permitidas, antes que el bullpen se encargara del resto. Dos carreras adicionales en contra y el control de daños funcionó a las mil maravillas para que los Azulejos de Toronto, se llevaran el primero de la serie mundial en su casa, con marcador de 11-4 sobre los peligrosos Dodgers de Los Ángeles. Just yesterday , we backed his bold move to start a rookie with only seven big-league outings under his belt. Could’ve gone sideways. But it didn’t. The kid came out firing and kept L.A.’s stacked lineup in check, giving up just two runs before handing it off to the pen. They gave up two more, but the damage control was textbook, and the Blue Jays took Game 1 of the World Series at home with an 11–4 beatdown of the dangerous Dodgers. First mission accomplished: if this thing goes long, the series is guaranteed to return to Canada. And trust me, on paper, a sweep is the last thing anyone’s expecting.

Y es que como costumbre durante la postemporada angelina, los Dodgers se fueron adelante en el marcador y Snell dominó hasta que se derrumbó en el sexto episodio. Todo parecía marchar sobre ruedas hasta que los Azulejos demostraron el porqué llegaron hasta acá. Una ofensiva de nueve carreras en un solo episodio les bastó. Y con ello rompieron e igualaron algunos récords para carreras anotadas en un solo inning ¿El más interesante? El cuadrangular con las bases llenas de Addison Barger en plan de emergente de Davis Schneider (ningún parentesco con el manager), quien se convirtió en el primer hombre de la historia de las series mundiales en batear un grand slam viniendo desde la banca (y estamos hablando de 121 series mundiales) ¿No es hermoso el béisbol? En el festín de ese episodio, también participó el venezolano Andrés Giménez quien largó un imparable con las bases llenas, impulsando una para colocar las cosas 5-2 en ese momento.

Y acá cabe una pregunta filosófica en el manejo del pitcheo. Es verdad, para el instante en que el manager Dave Roberts reemplaza a Snell, el hombre había arribado a la cuenta exacta de 100 pitcheos, permitiendo que las bases se llenaran y el hit de Giménez. Y aquí está lo interesante ¿No era preferible terminar el episodio con Snell ligando un doble play, que traer a un dudoso relevista para evitar más daños? Es decir, Snell es un hombre probado en mil batallas y si vas a morir de todas maneras, es preferible hacerlo con tu mejor abridor. Pero, demasiada gente habría hecho lo mismo que el manager de los Dodgers. Y el razonamiento habría sido la preferencia por limitar la sangría de carreras con brazos frescos, en lugar de un improbable frenado con vuestro abridor ya cansado. Y quizás quienes creen en el llamado al bullpen tendrían razón, pero las cosas se pusieron mucho peores luego del reemplazo a Snell.

And honestly, this is where a philosophical question creeps into bullpen management. Sure, by the time skipper Dave Roberts pulled Snell, the lefty had hit the 100-pitch mark, loaded the bases, and given up the knock to Giménez. But here’s the thing—wouldn’t it have made more sense to let your battle-tested ace try to roll a double play and finish the inning himself, rather than hand the ball to a shaky reliever and hope for the best? Snell’s been through the wars, and if you’re gonna go down, maybe you go down with your horse. Then again, plenty of folks would’ve made the same call López did—fresh arm, clean slate, try to stop the bleeding. Maybe that logic holds up on paper. But in this case? Things unraveled fast the moment Snell hit the showers.

Lamentablemente, una vez sucedidos las jugadas, no caben las preguntas del tipo ¿Y si..? ¿La razón? El tiempo no regresa, avanza. Y es por ello que el juego de hoy es vital para las aspiraciones de los Azulejos. Llegar arriba a Los Ángeles con 2-0 les entrega un poderoso margen de error a los canadienses. Si leyeron bien nuestra previa de ayer, una de las cuestiones claves era controlar el daño que podría hacer Ohtani. Y aunque el japonés largó un cuadrangular para acercar a los azules en el séptimo, el resto de la increíble maquinaria ofensiva californiana se mantuvo apagada. Un hombre no hace montaña y los demostraron ayer los Jays, al no dejar hacer más y regalar par de ponches incluso al asiático. Todas las claves se cumplieron y es por ello que los Azulejos se van arriba. A veces, venir caliente desde otras series jugadas, es mejor que descansar tanto tiempo, como fue el caso de los esquivadores. Ahora le toca a Shohei y compañía, demostrar el porqué vinieron a jugar la serie mundial ¿Por qué? Bueno, digamos que muchas apuestas ayer se cayeron. Los leo en los comentarios.

Si que fue una sorpresa este primer encuentro de la serie mundial. Eso es lo bonito del deporte y el béisbol que nos puede sorprender. Aún sigo viendo a los Dodgers favoritos, veremos que pasa... Un placer leerlo. Saludos mi estimado.
