¿Yankees jugando pelota caribe? // Yankees playing Caribbean ball? || OPINION

The closest thing to the Caribbean rivalry of a game between the Navegantes del Magallanes and the Leones del Caracas is a showdown between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. Of course, the latter's roots have historical origins, while the former is related to the social gaps between the upper-middle class and the working class in Venezuela. However, none of this matters because what it's all about is watching good baseball.

But baseball today relies heavily on long connections and less on base running. The latter characteristic is an essential component in so-called Caribbean baseball, a style of play that relies more on the mental weakness of the opponent to take advantage of the gaps allowed when the ball is alive. A ball is alive when it remains in play and no umpire has declared a time-out. In addition, it is said to be played Caribbean when the other team does not expect or is not prepared for a play, according to defensive standards.

It would take us much more than a single article to explain the Caribbean style, we will only say that it is very difficult to see the Anglo-Saxons calling such a play to their team. And that's because the New York Yankees petrified everyone last night when they called such a play and surprised all and sundry, to overcome the differential in a two-run tie with the Boston Red Sox, the second of a three-game series at Fenway Park. And given the Mules' poor run of winning games lately, the manager's order is understandable.

With yesterday's, the Yankees have only been able to win three games since the trade deadline ended on August 2. The good thing is the lead they have in the American League East division. The war to the death between the Blue Jays, Rays, Orioles, and the Red Sox themselves has kept the 10-game lead in the standings unassailable. But they need to win at any cost and a sample of this is summarized in the description of the play. First, we want to clarify: all the runs came courtesy of newcomers to the Big Apple.

After tying the Red Sox by opening the fifth inning on a hit courtesy of left-fielder Andrew Benintendi and a home run by shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa, the Yankees went into the ninth episode desperate for a win. With one out on the board, Benintendi ripped a double to left to anchor second base. Catcher Jose Trevino followed with an infield hit advancing the second baseman to third base. With men on the corners and one out on the board, the Boston defensive lineup moved to double play (two outs).

I don't know if it was the work of the Hawaiian Isiah Kiner-Falefa or his manager, but the guy stood up to touch the first pitch, and as if in a slow-motion epic, he touched the ball towards first base. So unexpected was the play and so good was the touch of the ball, that no one got to him to avoid the disaster. Not even the out at first because Boston's second baseman, who was supposed to make the assist, didn't show up at the pad Isn't baseball beautiful? The Yankees went up by one and the game ended when they got the three outs in the ninth from Boston three runs to two.
