My Actifit Report Card: September 16 2025 | Dedication of nurses hidden behind the patient's smile: My experience of Infection Control "
Today I want to share some things related to my experience with you. Our hospital often contains patients with head and neck surgery. The biggest challenge after such surgeries is surgical site infection (SSI).
The part of the head and neck is near Mouth and Throat, where there are already many bacteria present. When surgery is done, these bacteria can easily reach the surgical site and become the cause of infection. This is the reason that the risk of infection is more at this place. If the infection is done then the recoverry becomes long and the patient suffers a lot.
That is why Drain Care and Oral Care are very important here. After surgery, a drain is applied in the body of the patient so that the fluid stored inside can come out. If the drain is not properly cleaned and dressing, then this can become the root of the infection. I myself have seen how carefully our Nursing Staff handle the drain. Wearing gloves, changing dressing in a sterile manner and emptying the drain every time stops the infection to a great extent.
Apart from this, oral care is equally important. In the head and neck surgeries, it is very challenging to maintain the cleanliness of the patient's mouth and throat. Nurses regularly get the mouth wash, explain the instructions of cleanliness to the patient and maintain oral hygiene in a gentle manner. These small things make a huge difference in infection control.
The best thing to me was that the nursing staff of our hospital is not only technically perfect but also very polite and caring. When the Patient is in pain, then their positive attitude and gentle talk increases the comfort of the patient. Many times I have seen that the patient gets relaxed by their words.
From this experience, I understood that in Surgical Recovery, not only the technique of medicine and surgery, but Nursing Care and their dedication are equally important. On getting the right care, the patient not only avoids infection but also recovers quickly.

As a nurse myself I completely relate to your experience. Yes, we really have to do everything for our patients, from careful drain care to maintaining oral hygiene. Every small step helps prevent infection and aids recovery. But beyond the procedures, our words and patience can truly comfort a patient in pain. Those little deeds often make a big difference in a patient’s recovery.❤️ Kudos to you!
