Helping a Patient Reduce Pain with Guided Breathing Exercise | Actifit Report
Greetings of the day,
Today during my duty in the hospital, I had the opportunity to help a patient who was experiencing discomfort and pain after a medical procedure. Sometimes patients feel anxious and their breathing becomes shallow, which can increase their pain and stress levels. In such situations, simple breathing techniques can make a big difference. I decided to guide the patient through a breathing exercise to help him relax and feel more comfortable.

First, I explained the process to the patient in a calm and supportive way. I asked him to focus on slow and deep breathing. The idea was to inhale slowly through the nose, hold the breath for a few seconds, and then exhale gently through the mouth. This technique helps the body relax and can reduce the feeling of pain or tension. At the same time, it also improves oxygen flow and helps the patient feel more in control of his body.

While guiding the patient, I stood near him and demonstrated the breathing pattern so he could easily follow it. The environment around us was quiet and bright, with natural light coming through the large glass window and a small garden visible outside. This peaceful environment also helped the patient feel calmer and more relaxed during the exercise.

After practicing the breathing exercise for a few minutes, I noticed that the patient’s body language became more relaxed. His breathing slowed down and he seemed much more comfortable than before. Moments like these remind me that healthcare is not only about medicines and treatments, but also about small supportive actions that can improve a patient’s well-being.

Helping patients in this way gives me a sense of satisfaction and motivation to continue learning better techniques for patient care. Guided breathing exercises are simple but powerful, and they can be very useful in reducing anxiety, stress, and even pain in many situations.
