Day 3 – Breathing Technique for Pain Management in a Cancer Patient

(Edited)

Greetings of the day,

Today was Day 3 of my breathing technique practice for pain management with a cancer patient during my hospital duty. Working closely with patients who are undergoing cancer treatment often shows how much physical discomfort and emotional stress they experience. Along with medications, simple non-pharmacological techniques like breathing exercises can play an important role in helping patients relax and cope with pain.

During my shift today, I again spent some time with the same patient to continue practicing the breathing technique. I guided the patient to sit comfortably near the window in the hospital corridor where there was fresh air and natural light. A calm and peaceful environment can help patients feel more relaxed and focused. After making sure the patient was comfortable, I reminded her about the deep breathing method we had practiced in the previous sessions.

I asked the patient to slowly inhale through the nose, hold the breath for a few seconds, and then gently exhale through the mouth. I demonstrated the process again so it would be easier to follow. We practiced this breathing cycle for around 5–10 minutes, focusing on slow and controlled breathing. Compared to the first day, the patient seemed more confident and comfortable performing the exercise.

Breathing techniques can help activate the body’s relaxation response and support better oxygen flow throughout the body. This can help reduce stress, relax muscles, and slightly decrease the perception of pain. During today’s session, I noticed that the patient appeared calmer and more relaxed. She also mentioned that focusing on breathing helped distract her mind from the discomfort she was feeling earlier.

This third day of practice made me realize how consistent supportive care can improve a patient’s comfort level. Even though breathing exercises do not completely remove pain, they can provide emotional relief and help patients feel more in control of their body. As a healthcare worker, moments like these remind me that patient care is not only about medicines but also about compassion, communication, and simple therapeutic techniques.

I hope to continue learning and applying such relaxation and breathing strategies so that I can contribute to better holistic care for my patients in the future.

Thanks for your support
